Proposed Monthly Contests Rule Changes

Wait, how come anything up to 8 graphics counts as a "single" pcx?

Note that the definition includes: "a single-function set. . .which could be represented in its entirety by a single image". Examples might be a title screen (2 PCXs), a single city screen (7 PCXs), Forests (6 PCXs) or game buttons (3 PCXs), which could be displayed like this, in a single graphic:

My experience with these kinds of files is the reason for the cutoff at eight pcx's. Though I think that there are few, if any, single-function items that use that many pcx's together, I'm also very sure that more than that many constitute the sort of Set we'd be putting into the new category. Another rule of thumb might be to ask: could I capture it all in a single screenshot? If not, it's a set.

Personally i dislike the idea of splitting the pcx contest, and also dislike the idea of having quarterly contests. It is likely this will lead to the contests dieing. I vote to keep things as they now are.

Your opinion is appreciated. I intend to give everyone an opportunity to vote for real very soon.

Me too. I sort of like seeing what everyone made and just voting for the best.

But it's all good no matter what. I've made a whole bunch of single pcx files so I'll probably enter some of those again soon.

I do think that at least creations that dont face any opposition should be pushed to the next month, untill they do face competition.

It is still a shame that some creators don't submit their work to the competitions though..

Proposed change Five: That the Leaderhead Category be subject to a Quarterly Challenge, which could be brought by any qualified entry author in that category. Quarterly Challenges could be held in March, June, September, and December.
I don't understand what the phrase I've underlined means.

I don't understand what the phrase I've underlined means.

What that awkward phrase means is that a challenge could only be brought by another leaderhead maker who had also submitted his work to the Competitions submissions thread that quarter. The Challenge would be held on the first of next quarter (Mar, Jun, Sept, or Dec), and include any leaderhead submissions that had been entered during that quarter.

It's an attempt, really, to get halfway to Wuhjah's idea of Quarterly contests. I don't think that it's practical for any category other than Leaderheads, but I'm not sure that the leaderheads category could sustain a regular quarterly contest any better than it can sustain a monthly contest now. So I decided to propose it as an option, and then to give the trigger to a creator (or "author") with skin in the game, rather than have it kick in only when enough leaderheads piled up. Just sounded like it might be more fun that way.

I could re-word that underlined phrase to say "which could be brought by any leaderhead maker who had submitted a leaderhead to the Competitions submissions thread during that quarter."

Since my suggestion convoluted things so much, I withdraw it. It didn't mean that much to me anyway.:)

I like all the changes brought about in post #1, but then I think we went too far down the rabbit hole, and overly convoluted things.

Well, since I originally suggested it, I'm not against returning to my original proposal (with one tiny amendment) -

Proposal: To separate single-file PCX's and multiple-file PCX sets into separate categories for the purposes of the contests:

Single-image PCX files would include any image which uses only one PCX, such as Wonder Splashes, Resources, Tech and Building icons, Cities, Buttons, etc. Obviously, in cases like action buttons, which is a set of just three files, an allowance could be in order.

Multiple-image PCX's would include Interfaces, Terrains, Spaceships or whole Sets of images, such as Blue Monkey's Steampunk Tech Icons set, for example. More than eight pcx's in the complete creation would automatically qualify a submission as a set.

We could easily table the other items I brought up, if that's the consensus.
