Hello :) I'm looking to downsize my pc when I go off to University this coming year. (I've taken a year off for work) And I'm thinking about purchasing either a good DellLaptop, or a Mac Powerbook. My only qualm is that there is no Civ 3 conquests for the mac  I thought of getting virtual pc...but I read the threads relating to that and it seems to be a utopian dream =/

I bought Civilization 3:Complete for the PC, and I'm just wondering how different the copies are? My main concern is the lack of civilizations, I've grown attached to the Celts, and the original version doesn't have them =/
Is there anyway to import the other civilizations into the mac version? (If you customized them, would you be able to import the graphics for the custom units?

Thanks

All the PtW civs including the Celts are included in the Game of the Month (GOTM). The GOTM for version 1.29 was modded to add these civs to allow vanilla Civ2 players, including Mac players, to join in. It also went further than PtW in some respects, adding some Conquests-like game rules like later map and contact trading, different upgrade paths etc, and extra Asian flavour units. The Mongols have four UUs with speed=3 plus bombardment, for example.

Originally this option was only playable if you used the GOTM start files. However, bluebox has now released a scenario file and supporting text files to allow them to be played as random games using the GOTM graphics mod packs.

The latest version of my GOTM Installer for Mac OS X (link in my sig) includes all the graphics files you need to play current and past GOTMs, and also installs bluebox's scenario and extras. All you need to do is to download the 25 MByte installer (broadband recommended ;) ) and, if you want to play old GOTMs or bluebox's scenario, swap three files. Details of the file swaps are in the readme's that come with the installer.

If you want to read about bluebox's scenario then his thread is here.

To answer the other question, presumably the other civs CAN be added to the Mac version. Might take a bit of setting-up, but if you've purchased a copy of Complete, it seems reasonable to copy the files onto the Mac.

Of course, as it will be played under vanilla, some of the attributes will have to be trimmed (eg enslave ability). But at least the graphics etc should be directly transferrable.

Okay :) Glad I will still be able to play as my celts :king:

Couple questions though, what exactly is "Vanilla Civ," and is a brand new powerbook good enough to play Civ 3?

merci bien :)

"Vanilla Civ" is th standard Civ III version, currently being a very stable 1.29beta release on Macintosh.

My 3.5 years old 500MHz PB Titanium plays Civ III "reasonably good" though not as fast as a DP G4 or G5 if you use 1600x1200 and in-game animations. In other words: yes, a new powerbook is more than adequate.

I have a 1.07GHz G4 iBook 12" 1024x768 screen and it works very nicely. At least faster than on the 466 Celeron family PC...

And a new powerbook is better so it sure will work with civ 3 greatly.
