Is it necessary to protect the settlers? Is there a way to have someone automatically follow the settler?
Thanks

It is not always necessary to protect settlers. If you don't have any immediate neighbours, and/or if your barbarians are not restless (or worse), then it's rather safe to move your settlers without protection. And even if they above doesn't apply, you can take a little gamble and move your settles without protection for reasons of speed.

It isn't possible to assign a warrior to follow your settler, but you can use the "move units as stack" button above the info box (i.e. the box on the lower right of the screen) or press "J" as keyboard shortcut. This will move the settler and its escort (i.e. all units on the same tile) to the destination that you select.

pressing 'J' only moves all non-fortified units of that kin dthat is currently highlighted, at least in v.129. eg: you have 10 cavalry, 4 pikeman and a knight. you select a pikeman and press 'J' it will move all awake to that palce from that tile. eevrythign else stays the same.
anyway, when your still moving settlers around most units are foot untis and have only 1 movement point, so will go at the smae speed via the same route as the settler so jsut move them both during the same tun and the setler will be protected.

If you have PTW, it's possible to have your Settler and a support unit travel together. And yes it's a good idea to escort Settlers, you never know when a Barbarian might come along.

Willem, what you refer to, is that another method than the move in stack mentioned above? If so, please elaborate.

No, it's essentialy the same as has been mentioned. However there is a difference with the J command in PTW. It will move all units of a stack together, regardless of type. So if you have a Settler and a Spearman and you press J, then they will both travel to the spot you select as if they were one unit. For units of the same type only, the command is now Shift-J.

I'd say that having the spearman and the settler move together with J is the whole point of protection in the first place.

I usually play with america and use my scout to explore (E). And if there are no barb camps near me I'll sent my settler unesscorted but if there is, I will first build my best attacking unit to take it out and then sent my settler there

If your playin with a lot of barbarians or in multiplayer then its a must to have an escort. but if not then the ai doesnt bother much in the begining of the game beacuse its tryin to build an empire of his own

Especially for the first two Settlers I do not build military units to protect them. It would take too long. But in MP game, where you can't just start a new one, claiming that you lost a settler to barbarians, it is essential to send some warriors or JWs with the settler. It also helps, since you can start with building a granary/barracks or a worker in your newly erected city and don't have to bother about early unhappiness.

The J command is pretty dangerous in ptw, it exaustes any remaining move points to keep the units together.
It's usually useful, but not when you move your units along, but plan to have the attackers put to use.
