PSP or DS?

I really, really hate flying, and I'm going on some long trips soon. As a result, I decided I'm going to get a DS (Not the 3d one!!) or a PSP so that the flights aren't so bad. I was just wondering if anyone can recommend one over the other based on just how much they like it, game quality, etc. I have to say I'm leaning towards the PSP since I'm skeptical of the two screens and the touchscreen stuff on the DS, but I could be convinced otherwise. I anticipate that I will be using this device exclusively for gaming and probably only for single player, so all the multimedia stuff the PSP can do will likely go wasted. I don't yet know whether I would mess around with jail breaking the PSP if I did get it. Ok, well let me know what you think!

I prefer the PSP, good games and great homebrew if you hack it.

If you get a DS, you'll have a TON of game choices. PSP on the other hand has a much more limited library.

Get a DS. PSP's are just a waste of time.

Agree with above sentiment.

I have both a DS and a PSP, but I only very rarely use the PSP to actually play anything. DS has lots of awesome games available too.

In addition, although a hacked psp is better than a non-hacked one, I'd still go with a DS.

You guys were all supposed to come in and tell me how awesome the PSP is and validate the decision I was ready to make. Not make it harder by saying how great the DS is.

Seriously though, thanks for the feedback. I think I better try to get my hands on both of them and research the game catalogues more.

Oh, and in addition the DS has excellent battery life, while the PSP dies a little too fast.

And the DS is incredibly sturdy. As long as you don't actively abuse it, it won't really get damaged. The PSP is more fragile.

It seems like the PSP tries to be a home console in a small handheld. Need to explain that I guess... I mean, I don't exactly feel like playing the same games when I'm on the move in the train, bus or plane. It seems the games for the DS are lighter and more "on-the-move-mood" adapted. If I'm gonna be playing the PSP I'm probably gonna be sitting on the sofa at home... And then I might as well play PC or console games... That's how I feel anyway. So for the sake of something portable I'd lean DS.

I'm going to give you my honest opinion and keep in mind I'm a HUGE Sony fanboy.

I've got both the PSP and the DS and if I were going to take one with me on a road trip it would be the DS. It's a little easier to use, has a big library of games and is more conducive to casual fun gaming on the go.

The only reason why I play my PSP is for the imports. The DS is not region free hence you cannot play Japanese imports on it.

Why wouldn't you want to get the 3D one!?!

The lack of 3D games seems problematic for the 3D, especially since many people already own a DS and don't really want to put down $300+ for a new one when they can just keep playing the same games.

And unless you are fluent in Japanese, nothing of value has been lost?

The 3DS is expensive, has poor battery life and few worthwhile games.

Of course, none of that will stop me from buying one when i can spare the funds- some of the upcoming games are quite interesting.

I decided to go with the DS. My younger brother actually sort of made my decision for me by getting me one of the new Pokemon games for my birthday after I told him I couldn't decide which system to get. I told myself that I can always go and get myself a PSP later if I really feel like I'm missing out.

I tried the 3DS at Bestbuy the other day out of curiosity (could only play pilot wings). I'm pretty skeptical of the whole 3d thing sweeping entertainment, and I think it would be great if it went away. At any rate, the 3d effect on the 3ds is fairly cool (cooler than I expected), but the biggest problem is that you have to have your head in a very precise position in order to see it. If you aren't in just the right spot then you can't see it and you might as well just turn it off, which I imagine is what most people end up doing. I didn't play long enough to find out whether it would make my eyes hurt or give me a headache.

I am not sure if the 3ds is capable of having stuff pop out of the screen towards you or if it can only create the illusion of depth behind the screen. Pilotwings only had the latter. If stuff can pop out, then that might add something more. At any rate, it's not worth the extra money to me to get 3d that I'd likely just turn off and that might give me a headache.

There is a small population of gamers in North America known as import gamers. They do not necessarily speak, read, or write Japanese however through the efforts of some, basic commands are translated. Some of the hardcore have even translated manuals into english, myself included.

I admit it's a small population, but you never know who the audience is in this type of thread. ;)

DS has better games. PSP has better graphics. If you like Playstation games the portable versions of them are not bad.

I used to love my PSP but IMO there haven't really been any good games to come out in the past two years for it. I'd go with the DS for now and wait for the next-gen PSP at the end of the year.
