PtW for single player?

I have tried to find an answer to this question, but it seems to be assumed as common knowledge. If that's the case, forgive my ignorant question, but:

1. Can Play the World be played in singleplayer mode?

2. If so, is it worth having, or is plain vanilla Civ 3 considered a better experience at this point?

1 - Yes, you can play hotseat, and singleplayer.

2 - PTW has some new units, and some ingame improvements.

I have just recently started playing PBEM with PTW, after exclusively playing SP in PTW, since it came out. I was quite happy with the expansion pack, although I will admit it could have been done via patches. (That's kind of a moot point now, tho.)

I would say get it. There are a lot of enhancements, and worth it, IMO.

Thanks for the answers! I was jonesin' to try the new civs and some of the interface enhancements. For an artillery addict like myself, the command to have an entire stack bombard is worth it almost by itself.

In PTW you might like the Koreans with the Hwach'a artillery (12.1.1 40 [saltpeter]). This replaces cannons (8.1.1 40 [iron]) and allows you to have a better artillery unit earlier in the game.

Its a MP game played on one PC. Player A does his first turn while the other looks away, then player B does his first turn etc.
Can be a nice way to play with your wife if you have only one PC. The downside is that there is no replay of what happened during other players' turns. I.e., if player A attacked and killed player B's unit before retreating, player B will just see that his unit is gone and don't know why.

I've only been playing SP PTW, and I find it a great deal of fun. I haven't yet delved into any multiplayer aspect of the game (yet), but I'm hankering for some PBEM...

And yes, stack-move is

The gameplay is significantly different in PTW so you should get use to it if you'll ever play it.

Permagoof,

I am not sure if you will want to use the artillery stack option. I get better results with individual strick commands.

The best features about PTW:

1. button to move only units of same type
2. button to move all units
3. trade screen gives you the current status of active trades without having to go to each civ leader and click on active link
4. extended aircraft ranges
5. extended button options

Still broken/not available:
1. F8 screen numbers do not change when change to power or score
2. no toggle button/command to reveal world tiles reference numbers. You can get it in the editor but not in the game.
3. Ability to save the end of game movie for replay later.

i'm a little confused. there's the stack movement button, and the auto-bombard button. and auto-bombard doesn't order an entire stack to bombard, it just makes the current artillery piece bombard the same square turn after turn. am i doing something wrong here? i really would like to press one button and have 20 artillery bombard at the same time.

@romelus and joycem10: I don't think that option exists.:(

Nope. . . it doesn't work like that. It works like you said, romelus, it has the same unit bombard that square. Maybe in the next patch. I doesn't make much sense to have a group move button but no group bombard button. Takes the fun out of having a SoD of 75 arty. . . .Well, not all the fun. . . :)

bummer. maybe the next patch can include such feature. perhaps a shortcut key for using all artillery units in a stack and another to allow you to type in a number and have that number of arties bombard. it would be quite cool if this could happen:

Soldier: General Romelus, how many rounds of bombardment shall we unleash on Persepolis?

General Romelus: ALL [pimp]

I agree with you!

Why would 2 people say that's what they like about PTW if they can't actually do it?

Wait, I looked back at the posts...it's possible they're both conjecturing about what they think is in PTW. Wow, they had me going as well as a bunch of others...
