PTW scenario crash on windows xp pro

I have windows xp pro, with 526 ram. I'm playing a scenario on PTW but my game crashes at the same spot each time. I've tried uninstall and reinstall and now the version is back to 1.01. I dowloaded the 1.29 patch but it wont install. When I try to install instead it asks me if I want to remove the selected applications and all its components. I've tried both yes and no, and then install it; it seems to install it but when I go to play the game it still reads version 1.01f. Also when I try to load the game at a certain year I get the error message: "Data IO error- DataIO operation system error: bic"
It was such a great game but now everything is messed up. I don't know what to do next.
