[Vanilla] Question about Archaeologsists and theming

I just picked up Vanilla Civ 6 last weekend when Steam had it on sale. I was going for my first cultural victory and I'm missing something and can't find the answer. I built a museum. I built an archaeologist. I grabbed 3 artifacts (is that the right term?), but they didn't all fit the formula to get the theme bonus.

I get that I can't build another archaeologist because the museum was full. I just couldn't figure out how to try and keep searching for the right artifact. I tried trading the ancient bracelet that was from the wrong era to the AI, but I couldn't get any offers. Now off the top of my head I'm not even sure if I got the option to gift away or not.

I guess the answer is that I needed to make more museums, more archaeologists, and then try my luck, but in a small map with not much room it seems like there has to be a way to get the theme bonus that is better than just hope you get lucky with your 1 and only archaeologist, right?

Yeah, you need to build more museums. Theoretically, you can also trade them (or steal, if you put one artifact into the palace), but obviously you need to wait for the AI to get some (and be willing to trade.)

It's hard to get all theme museums, but as mentioned, build several theater squares with archeological museums. Get as many artifacts as you can, and you can click and drag them from one museum to another to try to get theming bonuses.

If I only have one museum, I try to dig artifacts from different parts of the map so they don't all come from the same civilization. And just hope they are from the same era. But digging up lots of artifacts will increase the likelihood of getting the correct theming.

Hi Steve, welcome :).
Archeologists can be only built in a city with some free artifact slots in the museum. They can unearth artifacts until the museum is full. At each artifact you get the era and pick the civ. To get a themed on your first run you would need to be very lucky ... or have good memory. Since artifacts are mostly created at places of previous battles (!) you can try to unearth those from the same era and different civs. Otherwise do it like I do - build preferably three arch museums and fill them, then rearrange the artifacts to get at least one themed.
(the british museum holds 6 slots and is always themed) - (themed museum requires same era artifacts from different civs, which can be major, minor or barbarians).

It is similar to art museums, to get themed you need at least three different artists, so three art museums could suffice.

Yep, the theming system is a joke.

You can increase your chances of theming by collecting from different parts of the world but due to eras having to match, it's still no guarantee.

The best method is just to collect as many of them as possible or play as England, but the later isn't a good idea either.

This can confuse somebody. When you finish a museum, you have 3 free slots there. When you then build an archeologist in this city, you still have 3 free slots (until you start digging some artifacts), but you certainly cannot build another archeologist in that city.
Simply said, 1 archeologist per a city with an arch. museum.

Unless... You trade away an artefact, then you can build another archeologist. I don't recommend this, archeologists aren't cheap. Who knew people were made from hammers. Dr. Jones has expensive tastes.

My archeologists are made of faith or gold.
Just wondering about selling archeologists. Does the AI buy them and pay a ridiculous price for them like for other works? In that case selling may be the way to go????

I get it ... however it's illogical to think like this: I just built an archaeologist, let's build another! Except when you play England, who can have two at the same time, but both disappear when the museum is full. It is not like builders that they would have charges. Explain this :p

I have never seen an AI arch, but exchanged some artifacts. So it is possible, however I don't think AI is trying in any way to theme the museums.

Only question is why so expensive.
As every late game unit it is expensive. Can you compare the building costs with let's say tank or field cannon?

Can you trade artifacts? I didn’t think you could - only art and relics.

The problem is always that the other must have either free slots or trade for other artifacts, I guess ... the AI prioritises art. Artifacts fit in arch museums only. Not even the universal slots in palace or apadana or medici bank can hold them

Really? :O Not even the palace?

Theming used to be easier but in one of the patches they greatly increased the era variety. I remember once digging up an egyptian artifact from the industrial era while I had conquered Egypt in the classical era so it seems it's just random and no longer tied to any battle that actually took place at that spot.

That's what you get when building an archaeologist doesnt require an university anymore.

I've traded artifacts before. Maybe once or twice. But it helps to be playing a long game on a very large map with lots of AI.

And the era for artifacts is weird. I've also had industrial artifacts for civs wiped out in the classical. The change that gave better variety of era needs some work.

The UI for trading art and artifacts is horrendous compared to civ 5. I really don't understand the reasoning for going from a seperate window to integrating it into the normal tradewindow where you also can't see all the relevant info of the piece
