Question on Civ3 & Conquests

I'm planning on purchasing the Civ Complete package but was wondering that since it contains all 3 games, if I want to play all 31 civs, would I have to use Civ3, PTW or Conquests?

Also, What does conquests have that Civ3 doesn't? or another way of putting it would be: What can I do with Conquests that I cannot do with Civ3?

Thanks for any info.

Conquests includes PTW, so you would run Conquests if you want the 'definitive' version of Civ III. I never got PTW but apparently is sucks so I guess avoid it. Vanilla Civ III is still a great game by any standards.

Conquests includes 15 more Civs; the conquest scenarios (very fun); some new super-hard dificulty levels; some new units, technologies, resources, wonders and gov'ts; two new Civ traits (seafaring and agricultural). I'll let someone else add more or go into more depth if they feel like it.

Check out the Conquests forum for a sticky containing an exhaustive list of changes and additions. If you buy C3C then you're playing Conquests by default, but the other binaries (vanilla and PTW) are there if you want them. If you want to play all the civs, then you play Conquests - PTW has a few new civs over vanilla, but not all of them.

The general consensus seems to be that Conquests is what you want to play. Certainly that's my opinion. Vanilla is still a great game, but I really like a lot of the Conquests additions - civs, civ traits, SGL's, new specialists, and various small rules tweaks that I don't remember except when I'm watching my wife play vanilla and realize how much better I like the C3C version. Some people like PTW a lot too - not for the multiplayer, but because it adds a few nice bits to vanilla and fixes a couple of bugs without changing the game quite as much as Conquests. Kind of a Classic Coke vs. New Coke kind of thing...

Vanilla Civ is simply unplayable. I absolutely HATED it.
PTW made Civ3 worth playing.
Conquests made Civ3 great.

So conquests it is then. Man I just love this community, nicest bunch I've had the pleasure to dealt with since my days with CFC3 (Combat Fligth Sim 3).

That's a fact. The forums around those 3d-action games really suck. Most of the time they look down upon "n00bs". This is by far one of the best fora.

I remember going to an action FPS game's forum one time and mostly they're very verbally abusive and you mostly get non-intelligent answers. You can tell that Civ is one game they'll probably find boring since you have to use your brains to play, let alone win. But yes, some forums can be very abusive indeed. The CFC3 people were very intelligent and a very nice bunch BTW, kind of the same treatment I've been getting here.

PS. It's thanks to the nice folks in this place that I'm purchasing the Civ4 game, since I was able to obtain the answers I needed to know before purchasing. Firaxis got themselves another customer thanks to the Civfanatics.

I do have to say, we're amoung the nicest. However, I have seen some other games out there that don't necessarily look down on n00bs. Not as nice as we are, but not mean, either.

It all depends on the IQ of those who post in the forums. That doesn't mean that just because you encounter a handful of neanderthals, that you're going to categorize everyone in the forum as being like that, but if 40-60% of forum members are abusive, then it's an entirely different story. You will always have a couple of abusive people in forums. Think of it like the Corruption in Civ, the more cities, the more corruption; likewise in forums, the more members there are, the more likely you're going to encounter a barbarian among them. Capiche? ;)

Of course, with 60 000+ members we do have some Barbarians among them, but Thunderfall's mandate to us moderators is that he wants this site to be "Civilized". ;)

We moderators do our best to keep Barb activity under control. There are occasional "Barbarian Uprisings", but we manage to stomp on those pretty quickly. Consider us Modern Armor with a Chieftain-level bonus against Barbs. :p

It doesn't hurt that the vast majority of posters here are willing to abide by the forum rules. It makes this one of the most pleasant sites I visit. :D

stack movement.

powerful armies.

far more effective artillery.

far less corrupt communism.

those four things make me like the game a lot more. the first and third things i mentioned both speed up the game significantly. other changes like the new civ traits and better specialists make the game even better.

For sure, this is the best forum I have seen. I never went to other game forum (only the ogame.fr forum), but I go on RDS.ca (RDS is the equivalent of ESPN, and this is it's website) and sensfans.net (a forum where you can laugh about a couple stupid sensfan, where there are actually about 10 active members).
In the same way, I haven't still played a better game than civ :D (altough Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is a great game too)

I tried to play with 30 Civs once, wasn't fun. Three of them started out within 3 squares of me.

I have tried 31 civ on tiny map, and it was cool (see other thread)!
I'll try it AW on regent (otherwise, they kill with their free units). It'll be cool!
