How long does a MP game take to finish online?

well that depends.

A 2 player "duel" can be done in...oh maybe 1/2 hour>2-3 hours.Sometimes more.Depends how close the game is.Closer games will go farther obviously.I have seen duels stalemate and go to semi-modern times.
3+ players games will most likely need several sessions at least.Players usually set up a time to continue(difficult) and play 2-4 hour sessions.
Some games move to PBEM at some point.Getting the same group together for continuing has always been difficult.
Diplomatic or dip or diplo games are a little different.The main goal is just play as far as possible.Substitues can and do play a big part of most successful long term games of this manner.These type games can last months.
