Question on "real" maps

I suppose I could just try this out, but it'll be infinitely quicker if someone here just has the answer...

I refer to the maps (most of which I understand are DLC) that depict (parts of) the real Earth: Earth, Mediterranean, Asia, etc.

I see that you still seem to be able to choose a size for these (Tiny, Small, Standard...) but does that actually make a difference?

In some cases the description is "This is a huge map..." or something similar.

My suspicion is that there are different size "Earth" maps plus other "real" DLC maps of parts of the Earth that only come in one size - is this correct?

Thanks for clarifying!

Those maps would be sick if they were more liberal with the resources so you could play a normal game on them.

I've tried a few of the real maps found they were way, way too big - even for 18 civs on standard. For example, I love the geographic details on Eastern US but there's too much land, esp. since you can't change size.

Can't speak about most of them; but the full earth maps are the size they say they are. (Tiny is tiny and huge is huge)
An issue with that one on all sizes other than Huge is that the resources were placed around the previous minimum city placement in South Africa among other areas.

I don't think the size can be adjusted. IIRC they are listed as "small" maps but, as was said earlier, they're pretty big. Bering Strait and Japan were actually pretty fun maps, but I don't care for the rest of that map pack (continents plus, pangea plus, etc.). I've only seen screen shots of the Mediterranean map and it looks a little thin on rivers and resources to me.

As I haven't the impression that there was an concrete answer to your question till now:
Yes, your assumption is right!

The "real" DLC maps are of fixed size that can not be altered. And as otheres stated, some of them are *really* big! And, what irritates me even more - there are no Natural Wonders implemented so I miss their buffs to happieness.

The "earth map" of the basic game is an algorithm based map (I think) that can produce different map sizes. The smaler ones are less detailed of course and the "archer-shoots-over-the-channel-problem" is even more evident. As I dont play earth maps usualy, I don't know whether or not there are Natural Wonders.

Some of the maps in the map packs are for certain tastes... continents plus and pangea plus are examples of this... I've played around a bit with the ring map, which is not easy on the higher levels, but, I found, a lot of fun, and there is not enough CSs (in the middle) to get a diplomatic victory, so that's not an option. Others are good too, but you really need to play a map to find out whether you like it or not.

I'd say the map pack DLC is well worth it, but you'll almost certainly not like all the maps, I certainly don't, but others more than make up for that.

The Bering Strait map is a fantastic one. Really liked playing on it.

I find the Explorer's Map Pack to be one of the best DLCs, actually. Sandstorm is my favorite random map script.

There's exactly one natural wonder on the basic earth maps on all sizes: Mt Fuji

I only played a full game on an earth map once; and that was for two achievements:
1. Battlefield Earth
2. And the one that requires all map based achievements

Also earth is something your better off playing a civ that doesn't have a start bias as that gets ignored.

So I'm thinking basic earth isn't a script but instead is a collection of fixed maps; one for each map size.

As I dont play earth maps usualy, I don't know whether or not there are Natural Wonders.
