This may be a pretty noob question, but I've tried searching on the forums and google and haven't found my answer. Also my complete edition didn't contain a manual so~

I was just curious if it was possible to somehow swap main defenders in city/towers. The first unit listed always defends against the attacker and rather than have one "godly" unit I'd rather have a balanced army where everyone manages to gain experience through defense. Is it even possible to determine who gets to be the main defender for a turn? I hate my method of making the top unit run out of the city and leaving the rest of the weaklings defend a city they may not be able to hold.

Whatever unit is the strongest against the attacker you are facing is the defender. you cannot influence this afaik. If said defender takes a beating and he becomes less strong someone else will take over from him.

I have no idea what you mean by towers. Do you mean fortresses? Whatever it is that you mean, there is no way to controll who defends first.

Yeah sorry, I meant fortresses. And thanks.. I guess I'll try striking with weaker units before they attack me then. ><

If there's a chance your defending units might not hold, why on earth would you move your best defender out of the city? I don't recommend trying to control who gets xp when you're defending a city--just defend the city. You can manage xp better on offense.

Attack more and defend less and all your problems go away. :p

Aspyr included that exact nice feature in the follow up to Civ 2, Alpha centauri, but sadly it has not been brought into this version.

 That's exactly my issue cause I play very passive. So I end up defending against all these wars I don't fight back on unless I get really annoyed with them. It's silly cause when I do decide to attack I send big hordes and usually have little issues beating them, but yet I still play this way. :crazyeye:

I've experimented with that some - if the second defender is close in strength to the first (ie, the difference between the two is less than the fortification bonus), then you can just move the top guy out and back.

That said, it's more of a theoretical exercise. The problem is catapults - with siege units in the field against you, two godly units and a bunch of scrubs are not all that different from one godly unit and a bunch of scrubs, at least not until you get to Machine Guns, maybe.
