question: Palace Expansion

You also usually get a piece with an advance to the next era.

Jason - I have moved my Palace in the odd game where it was really badly placed (usually I just put up with it as it is so expensive!!!). Rest assured, all the improvements you have done to the Palace stay when you move it. ;)

In my current game, monarch, huge, 12 civs, 1.29f. I have manage to make my citizens happy all the time (well almost :D), all city (most size 10-12) have market, and all luxs. In the beginning of the game, where city were less than 6, I could make them happy with 3 luxs. But until now (currently researching flight), I guess I just expand my palace 5-6 turns. So happiness may not effect directly

From my experience: there seem to be trigger events that will cause a chance for palace expansion. When you have a trigger event and you don't get the palace expansion, the number of pieces seem to accumulate.

Could these events be linked to some extent with the civ u play, i.e. first fight if ur militaristic, a tech if ur scientific, first trade if ur commercial... ?

I've always found it to be pretty random. Occasionally, I'll pop in for a look at my palace, and I'll be able to upgrade:p How weird is that?

I can put the mystery to rest, I know for a fact it is based on your score and you get upgrades after passing certain score amounts. There is a place that has the exact amounts somewhere.

That is why it seems so random and sometimes seems like you get them after building a wonder, have lots of WLTK days or kill off a civ.

Those are just indirect causes becasue anything that might make your score go over the predetermined line for the next palace improvement will seem like it is the cause.

The reason why you sometimes get several upgrades at the same time is if you just made your score jump so much that you breach two of the boundaries at once.

Remember, score depends on happy faces, content faces, and territory (if I missed one tell me).

I doubt it. My current game, huge, 12 civs, pangea, monarch with all happy faces and half of the world, currently almost 4000 pts (and researching flight) but I upgraded the palaces only 5 times! Is that what supposed to be for 4000pts?

I ran across a post somewhere on CivFanatics where someone listed several interesting occurences that cause palace expansion. Unfortunately, I can only remember one of them: When you successfully defend your capitol you have a chance of a palace expansion. Although I cannot be 100% sure this is true, I have paid close attention for the last few months, and I have noticed many expansions after defending the capitol--I believe too many for it to be a coincidence.

First I was going to agree with rcoutme and add the following list:
1. "Culture Expansion"
2. Global WLTKD
3. Wonder finished

But then I read:

This seems to fit with my 3 causes.
1. Culture expansion, your border expands and territory increase means score increase.
2. Global WLTKD, more happy citizens, higher score
3. Wonder finished. Wonder like JSBC gives 2 happy citizens, higher score. Wonder that triggers golden age often causes WLTKD, higher score.

I don't agree that palace expansion happens during wars, because I’m a builder and always have high culture, high happiness and always manage to build the complete palace.

But I still think that the first win against barbarian or AI unit cause expansion of your palace.

No matter what kind of a game I play, I always finish the Palace before the game ends.

But I disagree that it is solely based on your score: Your score can never jump a huge amount, as it is always increasing by a certain amount each turn. The best you can do is raise the amount you are increasing it each turn(by getting new luxuries, raising the lux slider, or taking all kinds of territory in a turn.)
