Hi,
I was an avid player of Civ 3. I usually played Greeks, went for a cultural win, however, usually had a standing military, I recently got Civ 5. I was looking at the Aztecs, and their bonus seems like it might be helpful, considering I play a defensive game, however Rome also look pretty good.
Any ideas what'd be the most helpful?

They're both very good civs but the Aztecs are better built for defensive play, I think. The jungle start and the fact that you can just feed off of enemies approaching makes them good for turtling up. Rome is better with aggressive expansion.

Agreed with Arachnofiend. Rome's ballistas are awesome, but not particularly useful in defensive play (although the legions are great in either case). On the other hand, the Aztec's floating gardens are good for getting pop up, something that's only helpful if you're not expanding too aggresively. And their Jaguar Warriors are great for defence, since you can level them up and keep their abilities when they're upgraded to new units. I'd recommend using them, hanging back, and raking in culture. Keep your empire relatively small to maximize the culture boost. Good luck!
