Civ IV is crashing!

I have an AMD Athalon 64 3200+ with 512megs of RAM and an ATI Radeon 9550 with 256megs of video memory.

The game, when it runs is gorgeous. But it will black out, recover, then black out with nothing but the cursor showing. When I hit [ctrl+alt+del] it shows that the game is running, but it is all black.

Any techno types out there that have heard of any fixes. I'm getting desperate man. I had to play Starcraft. STARCRAFT!!! There is no telling what Civ-deprivation could drive me to. I think my wife has a copy of Myst laying around somewhere. Sombeody help me!

This isn't the usual forum for tech questions, but here are some diagnostic questions all the same.

Does this happen every time you try to run it, or just on certain saves when they reach a certain point? If it's only large complicated saves, consider lowering the graphics settings to take less memory, or playing smaller maps. Also check out the driver version and make sure you have the latest driver for your video card.
