I've just upgraded to a new PC (PIII 800mhz)

so I'm quite looking forward to the release of civ3. However, It was just a base unit i bought and the monitor was from my old machine. The monitor's maximum resolution is 800x600

and the system requirements state 1024x748!

Does this mean I won't be able to run it without a new monitor??? Personally I think 800x600 is plenty!

I'm sure civ 3 will run at 800x600. If it doesn't, Firaxis is going to get a long comlaint from me. I would think that 1024x748 is merely the recommended resolution. But hey, if you've got the scratch on you, go out and get a new monitor. You could probably get a good mate with your new video card for under $100 (NO, I don't know pounds).

i'm sure you could even find a used monitor that can do 1024*748 for under $20, I recently got a 17-incher up to 1200*800 for $17 or so and it's fine...

It's an odd choice by Firaxis to push the resolution like this- Civ never pushed technology before, and I wonder why they decded to this time. They always made a superior GAME without concern for technology. I'd rather have had Civ3 require a 500Mhz processor than push the resolution past 800x600... oh well, my GeForce2 GTS will handle it fine... but the principle doesn't bode well...

cause the maps and units of civ3 are considerably larger than that of the original civs.
