Questions about The BUG Mod

You have CvAltRoot.py done correctly, but it looks like in the shortcut you have a > at the end. Remove it and try again.

Woot! I'm very glad it worked for you after all that effort. I've seen non-ASCII characters make the icons disappear (you later screenshot with a partial interface), but I've never seen it cause the no interface issue. Good to know this is yet another reason for that problem. Thanks for hanging in there.

Does the BUG mod alter how normal fractal maps are created? This is my first BUG game and Im playing a fractal map but Ive never seen such strange rivers before and never seen barbarian animals mixed with barbarian warriors and archers at the same time. Usually all animals disappear when warriors enter the map, but not this time.

I installed that map thing. Perhaps that was a mistake?

And now a sign popped up on the map on an oasis saying "+1 C (Waters of Life)" next to one of my opponent's cities. How was that information available to me without the mod?

You do get the messsage when that random event occurs I believe, and you are told to which nation it happened. and the tile would have one more commerce than a normal oasis. You'd still have to look around to find it, probably, but it wouldn't be impossible to find.

BUG includes some custom maps, but none that alter the original maps. If you choose Fractal, you'll see a normal Fractal map. It has no effect on animals or barbarians. Do you have a DLL mod installed or any other custom changes?

You can see effects of events by hovering over the tiles on the map. While it's not as obvious as the signs, it's there if you look. BUG is about removing tedium from the game. Even though it does make certain things easier, the primary goal is to make it less boring.

Okay, good.

Nope, no DLL mod installed... But perhaps it's just me who hasn't played enough fractal maps.

Oh, didnt know that.

I just installed BAT 3.0 with the .exe and it seems to be working except I can't save any of the settings I choose. Every time I restart my game, I get the default BUG settings instead of what I chose.

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, run BTS as an administrator. If you're using the BAT desktop shortcut to start up, right click the icon, choose "Properties" and then the "Compatibility" tab. At the bottom of the little window, click "Run as admin" (or something to that effect), and then choose Apply or OK.

Now double click the BAT icon, and it should behave properly.

Enjoy. :)

I was running from a desktop shortcut. Changing its properties to "Run as Administrator" didn't help until I burrowed in one more layer and made it the same for all users.

Since you were so helpful, is there a way to adjust the map textures back? I found the old-style map easier to parse at a glance, even though the new tiles are more realistic.

Just delete or rename the BM_v4.50_HI.FPK file, and that will restore the original map graphics. :)

For those who might want to restore the old look to the maps, I found the file BM_v4.50_HI.FPK in
C:\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Gold\Beyond the Sword\Mods\BAT Mod 3.0\Assets (WINDOWS 7) and renaming it did the trick.

Hearty thanks to all you devoted modders for a very interesting product!

Hello,

I recently installed the bug mod, and though it was working fine, there was one annoyance: the icons for food, happiness/unhappiness, etc. were missing. I eventually found an answer to why it was happening (my name has a "ç" in it, so my profile on my computer causes problems) and followed the instructions given here:

http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/civ4bug/index.php?title=Known_Issues

However, now when I start a game (or try to load old files), the screen has no menus or any kind of interface, and the words "Bug Init - cannot find XML files for mod init" (as seen in the attached screenshot - this is the screen exactly as I see it, so no menus or unit commands or anything)

I've tried searching those words in the forum search engine, and found one person with the same problem, but this problem was apparently fixed by downloading a later version of the mod(? Here's the thread in question, I may have misunderstood it: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=310336&highlight=BugInit+find+XML+files+mod+init)

I'm at a loss for what to do next, or even where to look next, so I turn to this forum in hope of finding help. Any is much appreciated (even if it's just pointing me to the right source)!

Thank you.

Hi Darkeagle6. :)

Don't worry about your English, it's fine. It's my other first language and I say crazy things all of the time. ;)

I have some questions:

What version of BUG do you have installed?

When you did your AltRoot fix, did you use forward slashes in the target name? Like this:

Code:
"C:/Games/Beyond the Sword"

Did you install BUG as a loadable mod, or did you install it so that it will load all of the time (in Custom Assets) ?

Maybe ruff or EF will see this and chime in with some intelligent suggestions, but that should get us started for now. :)

Thanks for your reply!

I installed the latest version (4.4). I know for sure I used forward slashes, and I installed BUG in Custom Assets so it loads all the time. (I just re-checked all of this to be sure)

Mind you, even though I could still load up the unmodded Civ4 BTS, I was having trouble with other things, so yesterday I just uninstalled everything; I'm planning on trying to reinstall BUG again as a loadable mod to see if that changes things...

EDIT: So I've been trying a bunch of things, including installing the BUG mod while checking the "altroot" option in the installation menu, and it still doesn't work. I also installed it as a mod to check, and it works fine that way, although it makes it more difficult if I want to share saved files for input (or participate in the Nobles' club and such), so I'd still like to make it work as installed in the custom assets menu. Anyone has ideas? Could it have to do with the fact that I got CivIV on Steam?

EDIT2: After reading through some earlier pages of this topic, I thought I should specify that I'm using Windows 7 and that my BTS version is indeed 3.19 :)

I just noticed a slough of new technologies (diesel engine, jet engine, multiple expansion, pioneer aviation, prototyping, sloped armor, supersonic aerodynamics) and units (more than I care to find and list) that I'm not used to and I'm wondering where they came from. I'm using bug 4.4 and bat 3.0 and have been for several months now.

You might have installed the optional Modern Era Support package that goes with Varietas. It's a tickable option in the BAT installer. A lot of people were asking for it, so I made it available. I find it enjoyable, but you may not. There's a way to disable it, but I'm at work atm.

I'll post the details when I get home in the morning. :)

Yawn...

I almost forgot...

@ Gwynnja:

If you would like to remove the Modern Era goodies from BAT, go into the modules folder, find the Varietas folder and in the subfolders, delete (or rename to a ,tmp extension) everything that begins with the words ModernEra, EXCEPT for this file: ModernEra_4VD_CIV4ArtDefines_Unit.xml

That file is needed by something else in VD.

Remember that you will break saves if you do this, so finish your current game first if you have one going. :)

Back on the topic of appropriate music selections for the national wonders, you might want to consider Pictures at an Exhibition for the Hermitage.
