I was reading the terrain improvements guide and I saw the worker speed boosts... My question is, do they stack? Say if I have Steam power, Hagia Sophia and Caste system...

so %50 from Steam, %50 from HS, %25 from CS, a %125 bonus to worker improvement?

Also I have another question, I want my workers to build ONLY railroads... I dont want them to hook up any resources, also I dont want them to undo any resources I hooked up earlier... If I choose build a trade network, will my workers only build railroads?

Thank you for your time...

I thought that steam power obsoletes the Hagia Sofia? I didn't think CS gives a speed boost to constructing either, though I'm likely wrong on this.

They do stack though. I was running serfdom and along with steam power and it took I think 1 turn to construct railroads. I switched to something else and it then took longer to finish. On normal speed anyway.

Heh I am not sure what obseletes what, but I understand that workers imp. bonuses stack :)

thanks :)

Serfdom improves worker speed by 50%, as does hagia sofia/steam power. hagia sofi is obsoleted by steam power, but if you have one or the other in conjunction then your worker speed will be +100%, although serfdom is often considered a weaker civic than slavery, caste, or emancipation, and using it sacrifices the ability to Whip, run multiple scientists/merchants/artists, or enjoy the happiness and cottage growth emancipation provides.

Unless you're SPI then you can use serfdom when you don't need to whip, especially if you don't need caste for specialists.

Hm thank you for the answers... and if I choose build trade network after inventing railroad, will my workers only build railroads to worked resources or will they change, ie a mined gold mine to a fort? You know if you automate workers they only build forts over excess resources...

So I want my workers to build only and only railroads over existing roads... Will I do it manually?

If you you set your workers to automate trade network after you have the capability to build railroads they will cease building roads, but they will continue to build forts on any unimproved resource outside a city's bfc. However, if the resource is usable by a city, they will build a mine/farm/plantation/well. Remember, forts give your empire access to that resource for use or trade. I usually discover scientific method prior to combustion and will fort an oil so that I will have access to it immediately when I discover combustion. Forts over resources aren't a bad thing other than the aesthetic value, and the fact that forts usually take more worker turns to build than standard improvements.

So the workers only improve an unimproved resource tile, otherwise they will build railroads across the country...

Thanks

Bah, I just manually give 'em RR build orders. Stretched out in a line you can go one end of the empire to the other and they won't bug you again until that whole stretch of RR is built. Then come the branch-out RRs, the mine enhancer RRs, etc.

...unless you're on an archipelago map, in which case mine enhancer comes first by a long shot :)

If you instruct them to automate trade network, not autobuild.

Automating workers isn't optimal, I agree. And I usually do a continental railroad prior to setting them free, but i usually get sick of figuring out what I want them to do towards the end of the game and tell them to work on the trade network and leave me alone. It's also worth mentioning that if I notice a tile I want improve immediately I can get all the workers' attention by clicking alt+ stop current action.
