Queuing unit actions

War itself is changing as well. Beach is satisfied with the one unit per tile approach but wanted to “eliminate some of the congestion” that it caused. To that end, units can now be organised into a formation, which means they’ll always move together rather than having to be shuffled across the map one at a time. Formations can be applied to large collections of military units or civilian units and their escorts.
I recall this quote, but the problem is that it has not been corroborated in any of the dozens of other previews. I think it's more likely that the author of this one misunderstood how unit linking works.

Looks like by formations they meant army+support unit. So the support unit moves with regular military unit or army.

I think there are both types of formations, civilian/military and just military. The article says, "Formations can be applied to large collections of military units or civilian units and their escorts." So it seems to me that formations encompass both - grouping more than one tile of military unit or grouping military and civilian units, again possible more than one tile (e.g. moving military, naval and army units to another continent, or moving settler, builder and military escort to new location for a new city). I would also assume that the grouping means that the units will all move at the same speed (so ships don't outrun the units their escorting for example).

AriochIV - I so hope you're wrong on this one. Unfortunately, you usually aren't. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I really appreciate your Well of Souls! Hopefully this will be one of the questions cleared up quickly.

It's not confirmed until a developer explains it. It's still entirely plausible this previewer is making flawed assumptions considering literally no one else has mentioned this in a preview.

I know it's not a definite proof, and I don't take it as such.
I think it does indicate that thought have been given to it, which gives some room for optimism.

I don't know if it means what the previewer made of it.
Well-of-souls material - I agree that it's not.
A ray of hope to keep me optimistic - for me it is.
