ive been playing civ3 for a while, but have always won before getting to amphibious warfare: marines. i think marines are really cool and im just dying to use them. i checked civlopedia and it says: "marines can be used from a sea transport to attack blah blah blah" (the word "transport" is blue and underlined--This implies that marines can only be used from transports... this would surprise me... but i dont want to make any mistakes and forget to build transports. can they be used from other ships (older ships) like galleons or can they only be used from transports??

In this case it means transport type ships. So a Galley, Caravel, any kind of transport-type ship, can carry Marines and they can attack from them.

It's an either/or flag in the editor. Either a unit can or cannot attack from a transport-type ship. It doesn't specify what type of ship.

Although it does assume if you can build Marines, you've upgraded all your transport-type ships to Transports.

thank you. haha - completely forgot about upgrading... never really had to travel much distance with ships. just railroad my unit across the continent and theres a ship waiting. thanks for the info... very helpful :) :D

I just have a simple question. Whats the step by step procedure of downloading a scenario(I don't know if its called a mod in Civ 3 because i've only downloaded on Civ 2). I tried doing it the same way I do for Civ 2 but that doesn't work so what do i need to do?

There's some pretty good instructions in the stickied FAQ here in the General Discussions forum (link in my signature), so I would check those out (in the Creation and Customization section). Simply put, you need to download the mod, put it in Civ3's folder, and then load it in the game (see the thread for better steps though).

Scenario and mod are 2 different things:
Scenario: comes with a map, in 90% of the cases it would be incredibly, unbalanced without that map, unplayable I could say.
Mod: is designed to work with a random map, does not have preplaced cities.

Also mods tend to modify more the standard game, while scens do not do that so much as the mods.

That's not entirely true - scenarios can be just as creative, detailed, and thorough as mods, including new units, civilizations, improvements, whatever. The only difference is the fact that there is a map for a scenario and no map for a mod. There's really no other way to distinguish them, because both of them vary a lot.

Graphical mods, maybe, but not mods like Double Your Pleasure and Rise And Rule. Very little if any changes to the interface.

Hi all.

The patch worked and I played a bit of LAN game yesterday.

Now here is my next question;

Is there a way to save LAN games? Maybe a certain setting or other? Or are these games strictly play-till-the-end thing?

Thanks.

My question is how do i get to editor? I have v 1.29f for vanilla and i don't know how to open it and the FAQ instuctions didn't help

Just go into the menu and save it.

No, I'm pretty sure you can save it normally by just hitting the menu button (top left) and saving the game. Then, when "creating" a LAN game next time, select your save game instead of a new game and continue play.

Sorry, considering I wrote those instructions. :( These are about the easiest instructions to follow:

1. Go to your Civilization III folder. (Open "My Computer", your main drive -> Program Files folder -> Infogrames Interactive (or Atari) -> Civilization III)
2. Double-click on the file called Civ3Edit (the editor).

That's all there is to it. Alternatively, you can hit "Start" on your desktop, -> All Programs -> Infogrames Interactive -> Civilization III -> Civ3Edit -> Civ3Edit. Let me know if you still have trouble.

edit: Crosspost with azzaman333 on question #1.

It knows where all your units are at all times. It is a cheat they were given and they need it.

They may not know the path to get to them, but they know what is on all tiles, even resources yet to be learned.

You can test it by making an empty town when they are attacking and watch them head for it.

This way they'll always know which way I'm coming from, where to defend and where to attack... nice.

I've built subs only to try drag them into war. But after cornering a ship with a sub and seeing it not moving for a couple of rounds, I guessed they knew my sub was there.

So how do you get somebody to attack you?

This is considered an exploit by a lot of people, and I never do it, but you can take units such as an old warrior or a worker and put it next to enemy territory and keep it there. Sometimes they will attack it.

You can also do things to make them mad (putting units in their territory, trade embargoes against them) to make their attitude go to furious and they will be more likely to attack you.

worker efficiency confusion:
if my civ is industrial, how these worker show their efficiency ?
native worker 1.66 (i know)
bought industrial worker ??
bought common worker ??
captured industrial slave ??
captured common slave 0.5 (i know)
foreign industrial worker built from captured city ??
foreign common worker built from captured city ??

If you are Industrious Civ, Conquests

native worker 1.5
bought industrial worker 0.5
bought common worker 0.5
captured industrial slave 0.5
captured common slave 0.5
foreign industrial worker built from captured city 0.5
foreign common worker built from captured city 0.5
