I posted this in the Strategy thread that is running but I can post it here as well.

I went back to the 875BC save (I thought it was further back - I forgot how quickly times move in the beginning; it seemed like thousands of years) and I was able to build the Pyramids with the GL

The Save file has him in the capital (War Now).

I may have been too distracted when trying to make the army with him later on. wouldn't be the first time that happened.

Fiz, welcome to CFC.

You will only get the resource back to your mainland if you have a habour there aswell as the island, and you have the required technology to connect the harbours. So if you have discovered the technology Map Making, habours connected by coastal tiles are okay, when you discover Astronomy habours connected by sea and/or coastel tiles are okay, and when you discover Navigation habours are connected through coastal, sea and ocean tiles function.

The resource also has to be within the cultural radius of your city on the island for the above to work.

Scientists contribute towards research (3 "beakers" per turn towards whatever you're researching [1 beaker if you don't have conquests]).

Fiz, welcome to CFC...The resource also has to be within the cultural radius of your city on the island for the above to work.
And if it's not, then either build a city close by so it is OR use a worker to build a Colony on the resource tile. (Viz. Place a worker on the resource tile and press the "Build Colony" button on the Main Map Screen......The worker will be martyred!) :)

The entertainer obviously makes the people happy. I guess the tax collector brings in some extra bucks from the given city. What does the scientist do?

To understand, I'll first explain commerce:

A citizen working the land produces commerce (if at least roaded) the total commerce all land working citizens produce is modified by corruption, the remaining commerce is then split to tax-income/science/lux according to how you set the sliders in the [F1] screen.
The tax is modified by markets/banks
The science is modified by libraries/universities.
The lux could be modified too, though the standard epic game has no city-improvements that do this.

The total science, afer being modified, from all cities is added up and send to an (not visible) "tech-box," that functions the same way as a production box in a city; When it is filled, you learn a tech.

The total tax-income, after being modified, from all cities is added up, the total maintenance cost for all city-improvements in all cities and units (above the free upkeep limit) is then distracted, the rest goes to your treasury.

Lux only effects the city where it is produced.

A tax-man specialist will produce gold that goes directly to your treasury. It is not modified by either corruption or markets/banks.
A scientist will produce science beakers, that go directly to your "tech-box" it is not effected by either corruption or libraries/universities.
A clown produces one happiness. It should be noted that the specialist itself is always content, so if you turn all citizens into clowns, then all citizens will be content. (not happy) You can usually prevent a disorder with just a tax-man or scientist, instead of a clown.

Thanks for the welcome and the great explanation!

I've been carpet bombing every square with irrigation and roads. Is this necessary?

I've read about mining grass, which sounds silly, but if that's what it wants....

Is it prudent/necessary to mine every mountain and hill in hopes of finding something useful or is it just a waste of time?

I'd guess mining ore of any kind is always useful.

You don't have to mine ore (such as iron) to make use of it. Just road it and get it inside your cultural borders.

You don't have to carpet bomb every square of AI territory with roads. Just remember that if you're at war in AI territory, it can use its own roads. You can't. Also, you can bomb the AI's resources, such as iron.

Roads add +1 commerce to a square in addition to the movement bonus, so they're useful in and of themselves.

Resources don't appear when you mine a square. They appear on the map (visible squares only) after you discover the appropriate technology. For example, when you discover Iron Working, blue iron icons appear on the Map. ;)

I know that you need factories in your cities before they can benefit from the hoover dam. Do your cities need universities in them before they can benefit from the Internet?

No, your cities benefit from the free research labs whether they have universities or not.

What's the best strategy for defending an entire island, since you've no idea which direction an attack may come from?
Personally I don't defend at all. Whatever units are being produced at the time the enemy appears will be enough to take out the pathetic AI "force", typically a single archer or the like.

However, if you want more security than that, the answer is to place fast attackers, like knights, around your island. You'll have a couple of moves to get them into place to take out the landing force. Follow the enemy as he wanders through your waters and then kill when the landing finally takes place.

You can also ping the enemy ships with artillery. This will convince them to go home.

Know also that the AI has preferred landing sites, usually near your capital. The next attack will be at the place as the previous one. Protect that spot.

Keep in mind, a horseman on roads can move six, but a galley moves 3, so you should be able to catch what ever lands as soon as it's there.

The only civ that can successfully interdict naval operations is the Byzantines. With anyone else, it isn't worth it.

Is this not an act of war? I have done it to enemy ships but not to "friends" or unknown civs. I would like to take a couple of shots at a Man o War in a game I have but I do not want war with Liz right now.

I know you said enemy in your post but the OP seemed to be about general preparedness and options
