Got any more hairs to split?.

Oh, no, no!!!! I am sorry it sounded like that... I was hoping that it would work:cooool: . I was really asking you to find out if I could do it.

so guess that means I can't kick Liz after all... sigh.:spank:

Is this not an act of war? I have done it to enemy ships but not to "friends" or unknown civs. I would like to take a couple of shots at a Man o War in a game I have but I do not want war with Liz right now.

I know you said enemy in your post but the OP seemed to be about general preparedness and options

He said enemy ships in his post, thus infering ships belonging to civs you are at war with.

Ah sorry. I misunderstood. If you attack someone, that indeed is an act of war. So, unless you are willing to live with the consequences, don't do it.

yeah, I see that. Gosh durn it. A girl just can't have any fun in this game. :mischief:

It depends on point of view also, because I regard all AI units as "enemy" units because they aren't mine, but I understood the nature of your post, as well. Taking a pot shot at a tresspasser will start a war, but telling them get out might not. If you tell them get out and they won't then they will be the one declaring and then you can shoot them.

What's the best strategy for defending an entire island, since you've no idea which direction an attack may come from?
You can always "cheat" and just place a unit in every single tile next to a coast, so that they can't land anything except Marines (or Beserkers, if they're the Vikings). ;)

Or if that's not preferable, then focusing on your navy and less on land units would work also. ;)

I have a game that is starting to go in a naval direction. Kate and Liz are trying to sniff around my coastal cities. Ironclads were quite numerous in the Great Zulu destruction recenlty. I have 3 ironclads that I post at Liz's front door when she comes exploring my harbor with her MOW.

Now in CivII, I was pretty good a naval war but it doesn't come up much in III. The glory has gone when getting steel doesn't take you a major leap forward. I loved to send those nice shiny new battleships out to discover the world. :viking: They just reeked of power.

One thing I have learned to look for is that one little spot of land that is not yet in your cultural borders, you know the AI knows where it is. I like to post some left over warriors on those spots as placeholders.

Note that if you use zero defence units (viz Workers or Artillery) as a coastal blockade, these can be captured "amphibiously" by non-amphibious units, just that the AI never does it.

The best idea is to use a honeypot city. Undefended. Preferably close (3 tiles) to a city with barracks.

The AI will land close to the honeypot (don't have unguarded defenive terrain like hills, mountain). You kill the invaders and heal the troops in the barracks city. Works like a charm most of the time.

Well, you are exploiting the way the AI 'cheats', as it knows unit locations regardless of spy status. Although I wouldn't call it an exploit, as all you're doing is taking advantage of an AI advantage to begin with.

Edit: Crosspost....

Wow, weird, I was sure I saw this thread as unread, but my post was the last one it it... ;)

OK, thanks. I thought it was banned by GotM and such, but I guess I was wrong. :)
