You can post map requests in the Creation and Customization forum. Just start a thread called "Map Request: (your map)", and then, if possible, provide links to maps and other sites that will help them if someone chooses to take it on. Things like map size and other settings help them too.

One other thing, I checked the Academy [ possibly I'am going blind ] I cant find the calculations for promotion of military units.

It is in the FAQ.

FAQ said:
What are the odds of promotions?

* Odds of promotion are based on whether the civ has the Militaristic trait or not and whether the victory was against barbarians or not. Basically, chances of promotion are halved for victories over Barbarians and doubled for Militaristic civs.

non-militaristic civ vs. non-barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 2
regular to veteran: 1 in 4
veteran to elite: 1 in 8

non-militaristic civ vs. barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 4
regular to veteran: 1 in 8
veteran to elite: 1 in 16

militaristic civ vs. non-barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 1
regular to veteran: 1 in 2
veteran to elite: 1 in 4

militaristic civ vs. barbarians:
conscript to regular: 1 in 2
regular to veteran: 1 in 4
veteran to elite: 1 in 8

If a victorious unit fails to get promoted, it will always be promoted upon surviving any other battle in the same turn . This gives an obvious advantage to defenders as well as an incentive to use the same offensive units for additional battles whenever possible.
Thanx again Mike.B@Firaxis

So it depends on (a) if you are fighting barbarians, (b) if you are Militaristic, and (c) what level the unit is already at.

does anyone know if there is a bonus for being in the same culture group as another group as another civ. (say i am france and i am trying to negotiate a deal with other europeans. would it be more likely to happen than if i was trying to negotiate a deal with the chinese?)

Yeah, there are odds for leaders.

Also from the FAQ:

FAQ said:
# When your elite unit won a battle, there is 1/16 chance to become a GL. Heroic Epic changes this to 1/12. The chance is halved for elite units winning battles defensively.
# Contrary to popular belives, having the militaristic trait only double the promotion chance, not the chance for a leader. However being militaristic means you will get more elite units, and thus have more opportunities for leaders.
# No GL will appear from fighting Barbarians, only against another civs units.
# No Gl will appear from wins with an army, or from wins with a sea or air unit.
# You can only have a maximum of one GL at a time

1 in 16 is the highest ratio in the game for 'promotions', except going from Vet to Elite as a Non-MIL vs. Barbs.

You got your 100th post, I got my 4000th. Congrats.

It only affects other civilization's attitude towards you. Read this article for more info. However, the difference it makes is so little you won't notice it.

ok...so why is the bloody thing 3 discs? i was under the impression that all the stuff in play the world is included in conquests. so why include the ptw disc at all?

also, now that i;ve got the actual licensed firaxis version (and i'm not using my downloaded/creditcard-paid for version you guys picked on me for buying :p )
what kind of cool freebie/extra stuff can i downoad? do i need v1.29 patch, or is civ3 complete already "patched to current"? does conquests or ptw (the versions of those discs which are in my civ3 complete) need to be patched up? i mean, civ3 complete is a fairly new product, isn't it? so didn't firaxis patch/fix a bunch of stuff on each of my three discs before repackaging and selling it all as one this time around?

thanks guys. i realize thats like 6 questions, but....we're all devoted, right!?!

Hi shawntown,

Civ3 Complete comes with 3 CDs, 1 for each version. I have no clue why there are 3 CDs and not 1 or 2. Onto your other questions:

1. You can download all sorts of stuff. Check out the Creation and Customization forum for all sorts of Scenarios, Maps, and Mods. You can get anything, but things for Conquests (the latest expansion back) will be best.

2. You come with the latest patch for Conquests, v1.22. No patches required.

So I answered supposedly 6 questions in 2. Neat. Feel free to ask more.

ok...cool that conquests is already patched up to 1.22 (most recent patch isn't it?)

but what about civ classic? is my new version in civ3 complete patched to v1.29?

Yep, Conquests v1.22 is the latest, and final, Conquests patch. All other versions are fully patched too (not that you'll use them much, if at all); Civ3 = 1.29f, PTW = 1.27f, C3C = 1.22.

why won't i use them much? what do you mean?

while we're on this kick, i'm a lil confused as to how the whole concept of civ3 complete works. i'll follow the instructions and install all three discs, right? but how do they work together? do i just click on my civ3 icon, and all 3 versions--classic, ptw, and conquests--combine and play together? i mean, they're not seperate games, right?

PTW and Conquests are like upgrades of the original [civ3], dont worry, I just bought mine too and i havent even started, sounds like trouble...:mischief:

No, they are seperate games. Civ3 was the original. Play the World was the 1st expansion. Conquests was the 2nd. You'll select Conquests when you play - it is essentially Civ3 + PTW + more stuff. Each one builds upon the previous one. Install all 3 disks, but only play Conquests, really. It had all the material from the others, plus other stuff.

Hello, another newbie-question:

I´ve downloaded some sav-files from the forum but they don´t work with my computer. Is ist because I use the german version at home? Versions are Civ3 1.29f, PtW 1.27f and C3C 1.00/1.22(?).

Is there a possibility to make them work? (I´d like to learn something ;) )

Thank you for your reply.

And again:

What about the HOF? Only games accepted from the english version? (Ok, only a theoretical question, I´m far from posting actually ;) )

Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that the saves need to be in the language the game is in. I know it's that way for scenario's/mods, so I'm guessing it's the same for saves as well.

Ask in the HoF forum. The staff there would know best. Or PM one of them.
