OK, 2 questions

1. If a city has a several jungle tiles on one side, is it more likely to fall prey to disease if some of the citizens are working the jungle tiles than if the tiles were completely ignored?

2. What the heck does my advisor mean when I'm trading with the Chinese and he says "We know that Mao betrayed our friends the Zulu!" This makes no sense! One, they seem perfectly at peace with each other. Two, I almost wiped out the Zulu and they hate my guts. Three, when the Chinese declared war on me, the Zulu joined in...:confused:

It is a known bug, most turn it off.

1- can't say for sure, but that seems to be the case.

2- he means just that. The Chinese have broken a deal they make with the Zulu at some point and you are on some good terms with the Zulu.
 
There is one thing I really do not get, and it's really frustrating.

Fistly, there's the science. I recently won "histographically," and, by 2050 A.D., I wasn't even halfway through the modern times part of the science. So I will be going to Alpha Centauri...WHEN? How can I further science research without killing my treasury?

Secondly, there's the score, my best being 518 in a domination victory, "Catherine the Foolish." :blush: What was I supposed to do? Expand faster, build five million times more longbowmen and swordsmen? When does my score get to go past at least 1000???

I feel like some key element of game strategy is eluding me...:sad:

Win earlier and on a harder level.

If you are good at micromanaging your cities and turing SOME citizens into entertainers, you can lower the lux slider to make up for the gold lost by the science research. But this should only be used as a last resort. Build lots of universities and libraries instead.
 
About science: the higher the difficulty level, the faster research grows, because you don't have to do all the research yourself - you can trade with the AIs! Also, building libraries/universities/research labs helps to increase beaker output, and building roads on every worked tile increases the number of beakers those libraries are modifying. The first game I played on Chieftain I barely got through the half of the Industrial Age when the game ended. You can also turn up the science slider on the F1 Domestic Advisor screen (top slider with the beaker) if you haven't already.

Score is made of a couple things: your territory, your level, and your population. Territory is big - the more you have, the higher your score. The same is true for population, and it's better to have happy citizens than just plain content ones. Also, like most things, the higher the difficulty level, the more it helps, since your score gets modified by it (score * 1 for Chieftain, score * 2 for Warlord, s * 3 for Regent, etc.). So just try and gain as much territory and cities as quick as you can and your score will go up, up, up!
 
Oh and one more thing. If I get a bigger military, how on earth do I avoid going broke?

I hate it when units die in the jungle. :( doesn't happen very often though

It can happen in all versions, though, but it is extremely rare (I've personally never had it happen in over 4 years of playing!).

There are a couple ways: switch to a government that pays for some military units (e.g. Monarchy allows 2 free units per town you have, 4 per city, 8 per metro), build roads and marketplaces/banks/stock exchanges to increase your gold revenue, conquer more cities/lands to bring in more gold...basically as you keep building your military, don't neglect your infrastructure. Check out the recently-redone Civ3 FAQ stickied in this forum for more info (especially the Empire Management section).
 
I'm BAAACK!

Ok, so the score increases and science goes faster with higher levels and more land, etc. Explain this scene to me (from a friend): just past the "turn of the era" (about 20 A.D. or so), Chieftain level, small map, AND: just finished researching education, has hundreds of thousands in gold, WON by conquest with a score of over 2500...Of course, if there was accelerated production...I suppose that would explain the science and everything, but NOT the score...

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, how can I improve my score OTHER THAN by moving up in level?

Oh yeah and one more thing. I rarely IF EVER use the luxury slider, so that's not a concern here!
 
Something REALLY weird is going on...I have only one city on another continent right now. I eventually built a harbor so it would have access to the resources, luxuries, etc. It has the harbor, and I'm still building spearmen instead of pikemen and samurai.:confused: what the heck is going on?

Oh and if it makes any difference, this city culture-flipped from the Zulu.

EDIT: That was the weirdest part: I had what seemed to be a perfectly good trading route...

Score is based on land (and coastal) tiles within your cultural boundaries, and the number of happy/content citizens you have. It is also the *average* of your score for each turn of the game. So making a bunch of happy people on the last turn of the game will be almost zero help. Plus, the earlier you win, the larger a bonus you get, also.

You need to expand early, and swiftly. See if you can get a Settler Factory going, churning out Settlers every 4 - 5 turns. Keep making new cities until there is no more land left to settle. (Of course, don't neglect your military and other infrastructure in the process.)

Depending on the victory condition you are going for, by the time the Land Grab phase of the game is done, you should be well-positioned. If you're war-mongering, you should have a solid base for troop production, and have probably already been engaged in some wars to gain yet more land. If Culture, you will have been already pumping the culture buildings in your already-numerous cities. If Spaceship, you will be pushing your Research, and gaining the benefits of a large empire, with many cities/much gold to put towards science. Etc.

If you rarely if ever touch the Lux slider, that might also be part of your problem. You need to understand when to move it, and how much. ;)

Do you have a valid "trade route" between this city and a harbor in your main empire? You can't count sea or ocean tiles until you have the appropriate techs. :)

Depends on if your reputation is important to you.

If you don't mind trashing your rep, you can attack again right away. If your rep is good, and you don't want to hurt it, wait 20 turns.
