In the standard rules, yes. In the editor, it can be changed to as low as 1 turn. Not sure what the upper end is, if any.

I seem to recall the upper end with the Civ3 mod editor is 50 turns max per tech. :)

Sorry, considering I wrote those instructions. :( These are about the easiest instructions to follow:

1. Go to your Civilization III folder. (Open "My Computer", your main drive -> Program Files folder -> Infogrames Interactive (or Atari) -> Civilization III)
2. Double-click on the file called Civ3Edit (the editor).

That's all there is to it. Alternatively, you can hit "Start" on your desktop, -> All Programs -> Infogrames Interactive -> Civilization III -> Civ3Edit -> Civ3Edit. Let me know if you still have trouble.

edit:

I can't find Infogrames Interactive or Atari anywhere:(

My Computer -> Hard Drive (probably C: ) -> Program Files -> Atari OR Infogrames Interactive -> Civilization III -> ... etc

That is, if you installed it using the default options, and didn't click "Browse" to change the file location. If nothing else works, do a search for the file or folders. ;)

Is it better to let the AI take the last city of another civ and kill it?
Every time I did so the AI always said something likewe remember what you did to...
So if I conquer everything, but leave the last city to somebody else does it make a difference?
or is there a bonus for killing a civ?

No, it does not make a difference. What essentially happened is that you got yourself a rep hit when you started the war and only realized when the war ended.

You get a rep hit as you described for example when you move your units into enemy territory without declaring war and then when asked to leave or declare you actually declare or similar. Another thing that I could think of would be an outright RoP rape - be it accidentally or deliberate, but in the latter case you'd know.

And don't forget that a rep hit that you got from trading with civ X is meaningless to civs who are at war with X.

Not a real bonus, but a highly exploitable situation nevertheless ... ;)

I believe there's a brief attitude hit, because the other AIs wanted to be the one to finish them off. But to rep hit related to finishing them off.

On my HD directory, the game is listed under "Fireaxis Games".

When I tried to re-install my civIII vanilla, it always gets up to 41% before it says something about a cyclic redundancy check. How do I fix or resolve this issue?

Just starting in simple Civ III and am loving it. Here's my Newbie question. How do you "work" a fish or whale tile? My workers refuse to get their feet wet. They won't work in a boat and working an adjacent coast tile doesn't seem to get it.

In the city view you see all the tiles in that towns borders. The town will have either 9 tiles or 21, depending on its culture.

If the fish is in your towns borders you can move a citizen to that tile and it will work it. You select a pop (citizen) click it and it will be free. Then click on the fish and the free pop will move to that tile.

Note that if that tile is also in an adjacent towns borders it may be working it. This we be seen as a tile with a dark border around it and you will not be able to move a citizen to it.

To gain it back, you have to go the the town that is using it and remove the pop from it and then it will be free in the other town to use.

Thanks a ton! This game is logical enough that I should have known that you can't fish with picks and shovels.

Noob question on trading:

In Civ 3, what are the parameters for what a rival civ is willing to trade for a given luxury/resource? I am currently playing the regent level, and none of the civs have any interest in a fair deal at all.

Thanks!!

Are you sure you havent done anything to break your trading reputation with that civ? Or are you making good and fair deals with them? ;)

Not sure there are any parameters. If you are trading for lux, they will look at the size of your empire and how many lux you have now. If you are a 3 town empire with 1 lux, they will trade it cheaply. If you are massive and have 5 lux, you pretty will will have to really make than an offer they want. That is a tech that has units or wonders or a goverment.

If you want a tech fromt them then look at it true cost. That is the beakers needed. This is basically the map size times tech cost divided by level factor. Once you know that, then how many civs have it will give the discount for humans, not other civs. So if it 2600 and no one knows it, do not try to offer them a 1200 beaker tech and 50 gold, that won't fly.

I am not entirely sure about what exactly you are asking. What does your advisor tell you? There are two options:

1. "Getting close to a deal"/"they will be insulted."
In this case the deal is simply not good enough for them to accept it. The value of a luxury is determined based on how many happy faces that lux would give to your or your trading partner's empire. I believe it even factor in the amplifying effect of markets and how many luxes you already got. Now if you have more cities than your trading partners, lots of markets, already 5 luxes hooked up, don't expect any straight lux for lux deals.

2. "Never accept such a deal."
In that case you either took a rep hit, or they just don't have the amount of gpt you are asking.

Hello. Just another noob question

Is there any way I can disable 'viewing' every turn what my automated workers are doing? I have rather ancient PC and this, after the game expands a bit is very annoying. I have unchecked all options from 'preferences' menu but it's still there..
