@Dodgeball: don't be afraid to trade some territory maps once in a while. Be more careful when you sell your world map though.

Er, it's probably worth more than the 'I'll show you mine if you show me yours' kind of deal. Bad choice of words there.

Why would the world map be more dangerous to trade than the territory map?

The territory map shows your cities, and little more.

The world map shows all the territory you've discovered, including
resources you may not have hooked up yet.

Recently purchased the Chronicles.

I've been able to successfully run windowed mode in civ4 by using the _Civ4Config file.

having trouble locating something similar for Civ3. Can anyone tell me where it is?

You can't really do Windowed mode with Civ3. However, if your screen is bigger than 1024x768 you can fake it.

In the CivilizationIII.ini file (or Conquests, depending what you're playing), put in the following lines:
Video Mode=1024
KeepRes=1

Note the space in Video Mode.

This won't give you true windowed mode, but it will force Civ3 to be in the upper left portion of the screen. So long as your resolution is greater than 1024x768, you'll see part of the desktop on the bottom and the right side of the screen. You won't be able to move the 'window' however....it's stuck up in the upper left hand part of the screen.

Two questions:

1. Wealth - in the Civilopedia it says that that the Wealth build converts shields to gold at a rate of 8 shields to 1 coin (until you research Economics, when this ratio becomes 4:1). I know that the coins generated from Wealth are not subject to corruption, my question is whether the shield conversion is done before or after shield waste?

2. Declaration of War and reputation hit - I know that I need to declare war before attacking another civilization, and that my forces must be outside his borders before I declare war. My question is: do I need to wait until the next turn before sending in the troops or can I declare war and then invade later on in the same turn?

Thanks in advance.

After.

I think it's safe to invade that same turn. I have done so and don't recall a rep hit. However, if you want to be sure, wait until the next turn. Although all that does is give your opponet an extra turn to get ready....

I Have a question. Whenever i turn citizens into scientists i don't see any diference on how long it would take to research a tech. Do scientists even increase the rate of research?

Yes they do. But it may not be immediately noticeable. Especially in Vanilla, where you only get one beaker per scientist.

However, if you have a bunch of clowns and can afford to turn them into scientists, you may notice a difference.

Thanks for the answers, that was very quick.

In regards to #1, I suppose this means then that it makes more sense to surround the hopelessly corrupt cities with irrigation than with mines to increase happy citizens and get some scientists/taxmen?

And to #2, I would normally do that anyway. I just noticed that particularly later in the game when I've killed several rivals off that they start to hate me, though that could just be that by then I haven't trade with them in a while (except for luxes usually).

Hate =/= rep hit. Especially if you've killed off several AI. The AI like to finish off the competition themselves, and you may take an *attitude* hit for killing off an AI.

As for your #1, yes, that would be the way to do it.

Oh So i'll try turning a few more citizens into a few scientists ;). So if you make all the cities (or most of the cities) turn into a scientist research should slowly go at a faster rate. Not always that easy getting that extra food though. :)

Science farming is something you usually do at the end of the game - post railroads for extra food.

I get to the modern age on monarch difficulty before 1400 AD every time.

I think you should post a save-file in your own thread for us to look at.

It is a function of how many beakers you have accumulated at that point and how many are required to get a breakthrough. Say you have to have 2000 beakers for a given tech and you have 1800. You need 200 more and make 50 per turn. That means 4 turns needed.

If you add 3 beakers via scientist, it will do nothing. 53bpt is not enough to alter the turns needed. It may change how much cash you get when you turn down the reseach on the last turn, if you can.

Now if you needed 180 and where making 56 and make two more scientist to get to 62bpt, you would shave off a turn. Of course only C3C get 3 bpt for a scientist.
