I tried to download the patch but I get the "please insert disk" error. What do I do?

Nose around in the Tech support forum. My first question would be: What version are you starting with. If you've got Complete, it's already fully patched.

I need help. Moving a large amount of units in the game takes forever because I have about 200+ workers and about 50 military units in the game that I am currently playing.

In addition to TheOverseer714's comments, if you use either of those commands to move a large stack, you can hold down the shift key, and everyone moves much faster.

I have vanilla CIV with no patches so I can't move my units in groups with the x or j keys. I read through the tech support forums and found a post that said to contact Atari and ask for a disk-free version of the patch but I have no idea how to contact them.

I want to run Soonpy Graphics (white tundra) on a PC, but not as a scenario file. I have a different scenario I want to use, while haveing different graphics.

I have a folder called Snoopy41g and a file called "Tundra Forest.pcx" where do I put them on a PC in order to change the graphics?

you need to create your own scenario's folder to the same place (../civ3/conquest/scenarios). in your scenario's BIQ file you must set in the scenario properties window which subfolders you want the game to search for the wanted pcx if you don't do this, then the game will still use the original pcx files. the folder structure within your own scenario's folder should be the same as in snoopy's, so ../Scenarios/Myownscen/Art/Terrain/tundraforest.pcx

you can use of course more graphics, more texts anything only by moving the new files there and set the same sub-folder structure as the original game does it.

What's the upkeep cost on a bank?

one of the few great wonders I usually go for and love is Smith's Trading Co. It pays for everything such as banks, cathedrals (upkeep) etc.....

Question - I usually get a leader and build an army because I don't build wonders to get into a golden age; I get into the golden age by being attacked and then killing off my attackers and all of a sudden I'm in golden age. However, once I get all these lovely leaders to build armies, what is the best army "makeup" people round this forum would recommend? (obviously depending on what you can build, I usually build an army of knights in that time, or my favourite at the end of that era is army of cavalry).

I now can build yet another army - but what would be best - guerilla or infantry? I guess Infantry say they attack at 6 but whenever I use them to attack they don't seem to be as good as cavalry - but then again cavalry at least run away when poorly.....

thanks for sharing your experience with me!

Also, be aware that as long as you hold that MGL, you cannot get another one. So if it's still early game yet, you might consider either building an army or using the MGL for another small wonder.

Why is it that when I get an MGL, and move him from wherever he appeared to a city where I'd like to hurry city production (because I happen to be in the middle of building a small or great wonder), he only offers me the option to build an army? Is it possible that the MGL can only rush city production in cities within a certain radius of "where he was born"?

Thanks if you guys & girls can help me with this.

if you have C3C, then you can only rush small wonders with an MGL (as they cannot rush great wonders.) There is no radius that you are wondering about...as far as I know.

actually, Smith's Trading Co. only pays for trade-based improvements, not cathedrals, aqueducts, etc...like civ II's Adam Smith's wonder does.

I don't war enough to answer that question

The is absolutely no difference between an infantry's attack, a guerilla's attack, and a cavalry's attack, aside from the obvious fact that cavalry can retreat.

There is NO reason to make an army of guerillas when you have infantry. Heck, there is no reason to build them at all, if you have infantry.

So, whether or not you use infantry or cav in your army depends on what you want. If you intend to attack head on, I'd use infantry, because that army will eventually be pretty beat up, and if it's cavalry, it'll be vulnerable to attack. On the other hand, if you want to use the army for it's speed to pillage and mop up all the defenders in your land after bombarding them, use cavalry. The four movement points and blitz will allow you to efficiently get rid of a lot of straglers.

Addit: by the way, the reason you're getting into golden ages while at war is because you're winning battles with your civ's unique unit, that is, a special unit that only your civ can build. Winning a battle with these will launch the civ into a golden age (though fighting barbarian units doesn't count).

As psweetman said, there is no reason to build guerillas if you can build Infantry. The choice would be between Infantry and Cavalry.

My experience is that the almost only time I build an Infantry Army is when I'm beginning the invasion of another continent and I want maximum defense until I'm well-established there with a secure town, harbor, barracks...maybe walls...and ready to go seriously on the offensive. Then Cav Armies are usually preferred, or tanks or bombers or modern armor. :p Of course, by the time you have modern armor, you're also more likely to also have mechanized infantry. ;)

As a general rule of thumb, the best units to stick in an Army are the best attack units you can build: Knights, Cavalry, Tanks, etc.

On the other hand, Defensive Armies (Riflemen, Infantry, etc.) Do have a certain value, in some situations.

(Then again, the best defense is a good offense. ;))

Thanks for that, and specially for clarifying what Smith's Trading Co does - I really believed it pays for "everything". Typical me.

Do you ever build cruise missiles in Civ3?

I can`t see why I should use them instead of a bomber. A bomber can be used again and again, while a cruise missile is lost when you use it. And a cruise missile is almost as expensive as a bomber, and not much more powerful either.

I do build them occasionally, but not very often. Mostly, I build them in my farms after: (1) I have plenty of artillery; and (2) have enough settlers to meet my needs. As I like lots and lots of artillery and settlers, that's not very often. They're fun to use, but they're not particularly cost-effective.

You've got the "Elimination" victory selected. If you select this, then as soon as 1 city has been captured for that civ, it is eliminated from the game...thus, leading to faster MP games.

Oh, and welcome to the honorable Civ Fanatics Forum, slipknot 9,...where everyone helps each other!

Can someone explain to me how unit healing rates work? What effects how fast my armies recover from damage? Do my units heal in neutral territory while at war? Do units have to be fortified to heal?

Units will not heal on enemy land, unless you have Battlefield Medicine built. In C3C armies can heal in hostile lands, at the same rate the do on your land.

All units heal completely in a town with a barracks in C3C, as long as they did not use any movements that turn. This means you can move units on rails and still heal as no movement was used.

In addition, units who skip their turn recover 1hp on open ground, and 2hp if in a city without a barracks.
