I'm glad Christopher Columbus took a chance with his "Suicide Galleys"......or there might not have a been what we now call the US of A!

Not really. Cabot was in the wings, after all, and anyone who could have followed the Icelandic sagas or talked to Basque whalers already knew there was something out there. . . .

That is if the Basque whalers and fishermen were not already here. There is some suspicion that the Basques were fishing the Grand Banks before Columbus. And the Danes came pretty close when they checked up on the disappearance of the Greenland Norse.

Timerover51, I have a question you may be able to answer for me. In a recent game I did name my first army as "1st Hussars" For some reason, the image of the cavs always makes me think of Hussar units - I think it is the uniform style. Is this a thing to be done if one tries for historicity?

I happen to love the name and the uniforms - have no idea why.

Well, technically, you would not have a Hussar army, but naming units would be more historically accurate. There are a lot of possible unit names out there, You might want to check this site to get some ideas.

http://www.ordersofbattle.com/

If you look up under British Commonwealth/Army/Battalion/Cavalry, you will find some of the Canadian cavalry units in WW2. Could have Darski's Own Royal Hussars, or Darski's Dragoon Guards as well. You can also look up information on specific battles to get some ideas too. For specific nations, run a check on that nation's order of battle. The South in the US Civil War used the unit's initial commander for a lot of the designations. Mosby's Partisan Rangers, Ramseur's Cavalry, Jackson's Light Division, Washington Artillery, etc. Check the Gettysburg Order of Battle for some ideas.

The real problem would be historically accurate names for say Byzantine or Chinese or Korean units. Although one Chinese unit would the "Chinese" Gordon's Ever-Victorious Army. Probably just come up with something that sounds appropriate, like Belisarious' Dragoon Guard Banda/Tagma, and Narses' Imperial Horse Archers.

Well I was thinking more about the Cav unit itself rather than a Civ specific item I appreciate your response. Thanks.

Correction, Darski, I misunderstood what you were looking for. The idea of naming the cavalry after Hussars is a good one, and the Order of Battle site would give you a lot of ideas on the possibilities. It would not have to be civilization-specific, but something that you can relate too. Being a military historian, my mind starts thinking more of actual units, but that is a quirk of being me. Sort of like game modification. I will be spending part of the weekend modifying Axis and Allies, the board game, to add weather effects and random events that offer temporary and permanent boosts to your country. I will be spending the next three weeks teaching history through the use of board games at National-Louis University in Skokie, Illinois. Anyone in the area that might like to visit and see the program, let me know.

For cavalry, besides Hussars, you can use Dragoons, Guards and Life Guards, Stradiots (the precursors to the Hussar), and Lancers, along with the city of origin, say for the British, whom I think you will be playing shortly in your A to Z games, the Norfolk Light Dragoons, or simply 3rd Royal Light Lancers. Hmm, all this is getting my creative juices flowing. More fun coming up.

After having searched the Civ3 Downloads area, I do not see a map based on the AD&D Greyhawk world. Does such a map exist?

Welcome to the Forums, WFB. I have not found one either. Are you talking about the one that came out in the 1980s? That would be a good map to have some fun with. I have the boxed set. You might want to post this question in the Creation and Customization Forum main page.

That's the one (with Perrenland, Furyondy, Great Kingdom, Scarlet Brotherhood, Iuz, etc.). I'll try the other forum too - thanks!

I just finished my British game and I did have the HE produce a leader every 20 turns.. that seemed reasonable.

And... I did name my first Cav army -as hussars and my second one was named for dragoons.

I appreciate your other suggestions as well. I can use those in my next game perhaps. France is up next and I have pretty good luck with them.

Oh... and good luck with your teaching time. It sounds like it would be a great time for all. My husband used to use that *sort* of game in his geography classes to get the kids involved and thinking.

Can anyone tell me the grid sizes of the "standard", "large", and "huge" map options for Civ3? (I believe those are the proper names).

I am designing a map to match the World of Greyhawk, but I need to know how many diamonds stretch east-west and north-south in order to make the map accurate.

Before anyone asks, I am away from my Civ3 computer for the next few days, otherwise I would be able to get this info myself!

Thanks.

I go with Seafaring civs, so get the extra movement and lower odds for sinking, plus play on archipelago and continent maps, so I need to explore a lot. .

I just found this really neat title screen and thought you might like to have it in your game as well.

I think it is the one I am going to be using...ok just cuz I like blue. I expect better of you though :lol::lol:

I just do not like the title screen I have for Complete so I had to find a better one.

OH no! the file is 404 arrrrrggghh!

I'm going to play with it to see if it will work and play well with others

100 x 100, 130 x 130, and 160 x 160

Your custom map doesn't need to be fixed to any of these.

Thanks for the thought, Darski. It would be a good start screen for me. And for a bit of added information, the picture is that of a US Sumner-class destroyer under attack by a Japanese Judy divebomber being used as a Kamikaze.

Thanks for the help!

WFB, would you be interested in any help with the map? I have a copy of the original as well, and have been doing some thinking as to how to convert it, at least as a map, to Civ3Complete format. For one thing, your editor settings for the map would be No Polar Regions, and both the X and Y-axis wraparounds turned off. Remember, the map is of the KNOWN World of Greyhawk.

There is a functioning alternate title screen a couple of posts below and I am now using that one.

it is so nice compared to that vault. What's up with the vault motif anyway?

In my recent game I was in the Rex phase and wanted to build another settler.

according to the numbers, it would take 6 turns for a settler and 8 turns to get to pop. 3. Well I didn't want to do that so I decided that I would build a warrior for 3 turns and then build my settler. 3 for a warrior and 6 for the settler makes it 9 turns with growth at turn 8.

I built my warrior without paying close attention for the 3 turns. I was not aware of any major change in what was happening in Paris at the time. When the warrior finished and the settler came up it said: settler in 6, grow in 7. :aargh:

Can someone give a reasonable explanation that I just missed in this chain of events?

My first problem is trying to figure out how you were building a warrior in 3, but a settler in 6. 30/6 = 5 spt; 10/3 = <5 spt. At 5 spt, the warrior should have been built in 2 turns, not 3, & that would account for 1 missing turn. Still, even that should have put you right on track. Were there any shields in the box when you started?
