No there were no shields as I had just built whatever and it was the pop-up asking what I should build next that got me involved.

You are right about that warrior thing... :hmn: It should have been 2 turns,

Your governor picked a food tile instead of a shield tile. Even with the governor off, it does manage which tile to work when the town grows. When doing any game where every shield counts, set the governor to maximize production on turn 1 and make that setting the default for new towns.

But the city didn't grow. I was still trying to get to pop 3 to complete my settler.

I used to have my gov. set to emphasize production but someone here said that you should never give a city gov a foot in the door. so I fired him

In Vanilla III, how can I make my units move without reminding them every turn, like in IV they move by themselves once I set a destination.

In vanilla, my guys always completed a Goto instruction. Goto is when you press the [g] and click on a tile for them to Goto. [j] sent all the same units to a Goto tile.

In Complete I find they get stupid if the AI gets anywhere near their path.

There are two ways, either with the mouse or the keyboard. To do it with the mouse, simply click & hold when a unit is active. With the keyboard, just hit 'g' when a unit is active.

For stack movement of like units, hit 'j.' (The last only works with a properly patched up C3 (1.29f))

ETA: crosspost

Emphasize this or that are only preferences. Having any of them set to 'Yes' instead of 'No' doesn't give the governor any more control. New citizens must be assigned by the governor, as you aren't given the option.

Emphasize production is a no-brainer. Commerce is counted first, food second, and production last. Since both commerce and food have been counted for the turn before the new citizen is assigned, the most productive tile will always be the best choice.

Just turn off "Cancel Orders for Friendly Combat Units" in the preferences in the Main Menu during the game.

Funny you should say that... I was going to ask what that does in the game?

Does that mean that the AI would not get in the way of my guys then?

No, it means that if a friendly civilization's unit gets within a square on all sides of your unit, then your unit will not stop its previous orders. You can also activate this option for enemy combat units.

Twas' fate that made me post that which was on your pondering machine (mind ;)).

That must be it.

Thanks for the help.

Ok, so I've got a settler unit and a Caravel unit. It shouldn't be this difficult, but how do I get the settler to board the boat?

Welcome to CFC!

I use the keys on the Num Pad to move units around. Just select the settler and then press the correct NumPad Key to move it in the direction of your boat.

Alternatively move both the boat and the settler into a coastal town and with the settler selected choose the load option (or just press L on yor keyboard IIRC).

When you load a unit into a ship while in a town, then then the unit still has a move left in it. If you unload a ship that has a unit into a town, then you can move it the same turn.

Have the ship either in port or next to a tile. If in port bring the settler to the town and use the loaf button. If next to a tile just use the move,

huh... ok that makes sense but I have to "load" button. I have a settler in the same coastal town as the boat, too.
