Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

There may have been some games that required special resources for GOTM for PTW, but I don't offhand remember them. The SGOTM also required the Mediterranean resources, I think for both PTW and Conquests.

Most of the vanilla GOTM did not require the mod packs, though.

Yeah I do not recall at what point they required it, sometime after the first 15. That is just my best guess. When I first looked at GoTM it was already required.

When Cracker was running the GOTM, he did have a mod rule set for Vanilla. I believe after ainwood and AlanH took it over, they discontinued that practice.

That makes sense as Cracker was running it then. I was not a regular visitor to the site in those days as was using Poly. Never realized it was changed.

It is still used for the SGOTM games, it has oysters and coastal rocks as bonus resources, wool as an extra luxury, and the ships have differential movement. There are almost no other differences

I have Ci3 complete I have tried finding mods for it but it seems only vanilla, conquest and PTW is supported. What do I do for Complete?

Civ Complete is made up of both Conquests and PTW. Conquests is the default game that you play when you autorun or click the Civ III Complete shortcut. You have to find the PTW application file to play PTW.

It should, yes. There might be the odd one that requires a unit pack that came with PTW, but those are few and far in between. And I believe that you can d/l the unit pack around here somewhere.

If you go to:

C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\

You should see a Conquests Folder and a civ3PTW folder.

I sure do. Thanks for the help! Are there any patches for complete or do the ptw and conquest ones apply?

Complete comes pre-loaded with the latest and final versions of Vanilla, PTW and Conquests. :)

WRONG! Complete doesn't come with the latest one, 3.19 IIRC.

hello guys.. ;)
i tried google my question but failed.Surfed ingame manual but didnt noticed.
1. So my question is..how to build that personal castle. All i know is that, people love me and they suggest to build it.But What exactly to do to build it faster. ;)

2. Hm, other questions are what makes ancient times become modern. Its by turns or who triggers it?
3. Can i be first in modern times while others are still in good old stoneage? :)

4. Is gold useless? Because i didnt found a way to use it.
5. City expands by culture rating ONLY? ( so i need to build more culture rating buildings - to make city advance faster right? )

p.s. i want all answers :) hehe thank u

Welcome!

1: All civs start with a palace that identifies your capital. As the game progresses, if you accomplish certain goals (win a war, build cities) you can expand your palace. When prompted, you just click away and go to the screen. You can build a palace in another city which moves your capital there. A strategy often used is to start to build a palace in another city, a process that takes many shields. At a strategic moment (when the tech is known that alows it) you switch production to a wonder or another build that normally takes a lot of shields, therby getting a head start on the competition. The Forbidden Palace is a small wonder you can build in another city that reduces corruption.

2 and 3: You change eras when you have learned all the required technologies of the previous era. You conceivably could get to the modern era while your opponents are still in the ancient times, but it'd be difficult.

4:By gold do you mean the resource or the wealth your civ accumulates? The resource increases the trade for the tile worked by a city.
Gold as wealth has a great many uses. Most improvements (temples, banks, airports etc) require a certain amount of gold per turn to maintain. Your government type will allow a certain size milatary based on how many cities of certain sizes you have, but to build milatary units above that requires gold per turn maintenace. Gold can be used to trade with neighboring civs for resources, diplomatic deals, luxuries. Certain governments allow you to rush construction of improvements or units by paying gold. Income in gold funds your research and also can be used as a "luxury tax" to make your citizens happy and stave off unrest. Finally, diplomatic tasks and espionage missions cost gold.

5: Your borders expand by culture, yes. Your cities will grow in population with surplus food, but to expand the workable tiles and to push your civ's borders you need culture which is produced by certain buildings. Culture accumulates, so a town with just a temple will gradually accumulate cultrue and expand its borders. This will happen sooner with a temple, a library and a colloseum. Whether this is necessary or worthwhile in a given game is situationally dependant.

Enjoy playing and learning!

thanks for answers...
well i have few more questions.
Right now im playing a match, normal map 8enemies, and they seem to be tough. They have more cities than me and it seems bigger army.

1. My question is... If i remember first civ had such option to watch all the time who is in the lead in wonders in army in culture in researches. As i look in those advisors they dont provide much information at all.

2. almost always then they suggest some negotiations they always look absurd. ( peace threat + gold ) if its some technology then i must give gold always, so i dont even bother to read what they suggest and because of that.
And they seem to have allies with each other as im being left alone to rampage all of them ;)

3. Anywhere is some video vault with your comments ? :) this would prove usefull, as i would like to see how other plays. Also somehow to see what other things of my tactics and so on. ( right now im playing with "perfect" tactic and its not doing well ;) )

hehe.Any comments about my tactics? ( i like to play with xerxes(its babylonian.. i forgot)) and ussually i build nice cities and i take care of shields and then i build immortals and it takes too much time to play this way.Maybe i build too much wonders but they seem so cheap ( 50 30 turns ) and it takes a lot of time to have 2immortals in each city + to make a nice army of 5.
This is slow.Any comments? :)

P.S. i strugled a bit more but decided to loose the game so trade all cities and let invade my last empty city. By statistics i had 3times bigger culture, and about equal power and score. But i just wasnt been able to invade others at all. Also im not sure if i was very slow in technology tree progression.Where to watch that?

Not sure if you mean Civ III vanilla as first or you are talking about Civ I. In III, all versions you can use F7 to see what is known about wonders. IOW who owns any completed one. Who is currently building wonders and which ones. You will not know how close they are to be finished

"2. almost always then they suggest some negotiations they always look absurd. ( peace threat + gold ) if its some technology then i must give gold always, so i dont even bother to read what they suggest and because of that.

This is normal in Civ III, all versions. The deals are not really as bad as you first see them. This is because you are not considering all the factors.

1) any wonders associated with the tech
2) any units
3) any government

How much it is worth in beakers. How many beakers you or they have in at that point. IOW if you have paid 1/2 the cost already. How many people know the tech, which alters it true worth.

Allies cost money or stuff such as lux or tech. If you are behind, you tend to not have stuff to give and those ahead tend to have stuff to pay. Even if you have stuff, you have to be first to act and other things go into the equations.

There is a vid of a deity tiny map, but it is not instructive. Look for things like my Regent tutorial or SG's to read.

Xerk is Persian and has the Immortals. Hami is Babylonian and has the Bowman. I wrote many a response to these tactics in the past. If you cannot make an immortal in 4-6 turns, try mines.

Again read some of the recent games that asked for help. Post a save for evaluation.
