Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I came late to C3C, sticking with PTW well beyond the release of the newer version. I got a lot out of the thread which deals with changes from one to the other (and even added something new!). There's one more thing I was thinking about that I thought I might add. With regards to bombardment, I believe there are no units with lethal bombardment in PTW/vanilla. Also, I believe it was impossible to bombard a wonder into oblivion in PTW/vanilla. Can anyone confirm and I'll add an addendum?

I just checked the PTW editor, and I'm seeing the Hwacha did not yet have lethal bombard there. Only difference with the ordinary cannon was its bombard strength; 12 compared to 8.
I do notice a 'lethal land bombard' box, and 'lethal sea bombard' box present in the PTW editor, but perhaps no unit uses it. I checked the F-15 and a few other plains, but they at least do not have it.

Optional: I could have remembered it wrong, but I thought the Hwatcha always had lethal bombard. Maybe someone with a younger brain will come by. :old:

Willz: There is a 3% chance of getting a SGL every time you are the first to discover a tech. If you are Scientific, that increases to 5%. I don't think there's anything else you can do. :dunno:

how do you destroy enemy nations in mid game?
i mean at the beggining u can destroy maybe even 2 nations in about 20moves or 30.
but at mid game..then the nation has not 5cities but 15 and each city i bet is well defended...

either you need a massive army or i dont know.
Also it seems for me as i play to build such massive army might take time untill the last technology is developed :P

p.s. i just want you to share those easy strategies how you do... u give much cash so they can give u rop...then u put each small army near almost each city to start a war ? or how? Because either way it is so agonising :P ( even on tiny map :) )

The Hwatcha did indeed come with Lethal Bombardment turned off in PTW.

You forgot "Make the appropriate sacrifices to the (P)RNG god"....

No great mystery. Build a stack of bombardment units, couple them with a few defensive units & a stack of the best offensive units you have & tackle them one by one. Armies make the job easier, if you get a MGL from an elite in combat, or if you can make the military academy, but aren't necessary. for very strong or large empires, armies can roam & pillage pretty freely without the AI doing much about it; cutting all the roads or railroads linking cities & resources cripples the AI pretty substantially. Just avoid fighting anyone when you do this; the AI will take on a crippled army & you aren't going to heal very fast in enemy territory.

Generally, I figure on something like 3-4 bombard units for every defender in a town to insure redlining them. If I can field enough stacks, I go for 2 or more cities a turn. Towards the end when the empire is at its last gasp, I'll take more chances & attack a few cities without bombards, if it gets things over quickly.

Cruise Missiles have lethal bombard. Both types of Nukes probably as well.

It took me a while to understand the role a settler can play in combat. When your enemy has many cities, sometimes broadly spaced, it can take quite a while to march tile by tile to his city gates. Sometimes you can found a city with a well placed settler and make some of those tiles your own. If they're roaded, that can cut your travel time by two-thirds (three tiles in one move instead of just one).

Also, pay attention to movement points of fast units. For example, if a cavalry marches on three of your own road tiles and then on to a one-movement-point enemy tile, then that's considered 2 moves. If, however, you can move across two of your own road tiles and then one of his, then that's just 1 move. Get it???

Nukes are not bombard units. Nukes are nukes. They have their own flags in the editor.

Other than having scientific civilization and being the civilization to discover a tech first. what can i do to increase the chances of having a SGL appear

You can stack the deck by handpicking the AI opponents so you start with a monopoly tech (ie make sure you're the only one to start with say, bronze or aphabet to increase the chance of reaching the next tier of techs first). Low difficulty and playing as an expansionist civcould also let you get techs from barb huts and put you ahead in the tech race.

Another strategy choose opponents that don't have Ceremonial Burial, because that's a very cheap tech and you can research it very quickly. On low levels it's not uncommon to be first to CB followed by Mysticism and still get through all the slingshot techs before the bozo AI have gotten Alphabet.

On higher levels you can use an Archipelago map to slow AI-AI contacts which slows their research.

Go to the diplomacy screen, click on "Active" deals, click on "Peace Treaty". It will ask you "Do you really want to renegotiate peace?". If you say yes, you MUST renegotiate a peace treaty otherwise it's a DoW by you. You can't renegotiate a 20-turn peace treaty until it's complete. But you have an implicit peace treaty with anyone if you are presently at peace with them and those can be renegotiated.

Hi, new here!

I can't seem to find the folder where my saved games are stored.

I went to upload a game to the tactics thread for advice and could not find any of my saves.

I'm using vista 64bit.

Here's my file structure:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\Conquests

According to the FAQ there should be a folder marked saves but there isn't.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

mine are after all that in saves, all files

I am not using Vista, but I would expect you could do a search for *.sav. Change to any known name, such as 1400AD.sav.

I'm using Complete in Windows XP......No Problem.

Some thoughts:

As vmxa implies, if the games are saving, they must be somewhere on your computer.

When the game is saved, what do you get if you click the "Up Folder Level" icon?

Also, are you sure you're looking for a Saves folder in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\Conquests and not

C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Civilization III Complete\Conquests\Conquests? :)
