I am wondering how the obsolete part of wonders work: Does it happen when *any* civilization discover the tech making it obsolete or when the civ owning it discover the tech?

It's the civ owning it. If it switches owners, then it can become un-obselete.
 
ok... another Q for all you Godlings out there.... Is there such a thing as to big when it comes down to the beginning expansion phase of the game:confused:? (maybe I should take a Poll to see what the overall opinion out there is) I know that the more land you have the better your chances for resources but I thought I'd Q everyone and maybe get some insight on when/if I should stop expanding my empire and start on infrastructure.

My 2 cents worth:
Depends on what kind of win you're shooting for?

If your answer is: ANY......then my next question is what level are you playing at and how many civs are you playing against and what is your map size?

How's this for a general answer: If you're planning on playing a long game, build cities until you get close to the Domination Limit; For a short game, build some core cities (< OCN)........build ONLY veteran fast-moving attack units (i.e. horsemen) + maybe a few warriors for MP duty/Hut popping....wipe out the AI! ;)
 
ok.... I was a bit vauge there... I have been playing regent but just switched to monarch.... I usually play normal to large size maps with 6-8 players....(I hate not being able to see all the enemies on one diplomatic screen) and yes I usually go for any win that seems the most likely possible...

on regent I usually expanded as much as possible until the AI started sending units into my territory then I started building def units for the borders and infrastructure.... Quite a few of the times I expanded welll past the OCN b4 I started on improving my cities... (I hate not having rescources later when I get a tech and can't use it...)
 
I just DL'ded the CivReplay utilities and the CRings util finally got me understanding the actual layout of RCP. Of course it also led me to another Q(always more Qs). I am wondering if it is better to use a broader spacing for the RCP around the capital and a tighter spacing around the FP due to the distance from capital corruption formula.:confused: I play C3C and have tried to test the closer FP wider capital spacing b4 to see if it helps but from the results (or lack of them) I am not sure if it only works in PTW (which I dont have and don't play).
Any advice on using the RCP would be much appreciated...
If you get a start loc next to the ocean should you plan on a ring formation that will later require you to move the capital since this will allow you to have the max number of usefull cities? It seems logical but it also seems like a LOT of time waiting for a new capital to be built unless one abandons the capital....
Sorry.... don't mean to ramble on but every time I post I think up more Qs as I try to finish.... :mischief:
 
RCP doesn't work in C3C. A good thing, as far as I'm concerned, because it lets you put cities in more logical places rather than "sure, it may be 1 tile away from the river, but that would put it in ring 6 not ring 7 and it would screw corruption in the other x towns etc."
 
RCP doesn't work in C3C? I thought it would still be a good layout for cities to maximize production while reducing corruption. Are you talking about the distance from FP vs Capital that doesn't work or just RCP in general?
 
never mind.... I just re-read the article in the war acad and it has a little dislaimer on the bottom that says it doesn't work in C3C v1.5 or later.... (Funny... I just Dl'ed the v1.22 patch and thought that it was the most up to date patch....):confused:
I think I would have a lot less Q about a lot of things if all the articles I've read in the War Acad had statements at the top that told you what version the technique was for....

1.22 IS the latest AND Final patch for C3C! (v1.5 doesn't exist...probably meant v1.15)
That's a good point about labeling the articles with the version.......However, I think most people update their articles as patches and other info affect them.

Regarding your gameplay parameters (viz. Monarch, Std-Large maps, 6-8 opponents, Any win), you might want to expand your territory towards the Domination Limit..........this would keep most victory conditions within easy reach: Domination, Conquest, Spaceship & UN. I wouldn't worry about waste and corruption........those cities can be useful for producing workers/settlers and/or changing laborers to specialists to produce waste/corruption-free money or science. This way, if you get tired of the game, you can always opt for a Domination Victory! :)

I personally only build offensive units + warriors for MP duty/Hut popping. You should have plenty of time (and enough offensive units) to deter the AI..........Just tell him to move or Declare War! :)
 
Hi, I have a question that I am not exactly sure, I hope someone here has a definite answer to it:
I know that when I found a city on gold, the city gets the +4 gold bonus; and when I found a city on wheat, the city does not get the +2 bonus.
My question be: if I found a city on a cattle or iron, do I still get the +1 shield bonus?

Reason I ask this question is so I know whether if I should avoid settle on shield-bonus resources or not. (I usually don't avoid settle on gold-bonus resources)
 
I have noticed that when you found a city on any bonus grassland or wheat or whatever... (except comerce+ tiles) you do not get the food/shield bonuses.... I wish this was not true but alas it is so... :( I try not to settle on ANY bonus resources if I can get around it...
 
There are a few combos tghat will get your city center at 2 spt right away at town size. Settling on plains with Furs or Cows will get it and I think settling on Iron will also get it. Basically, the underlying terrain must get 1 spt and the bonus must also get 1 spt.
 
When I trade a luxury to a rival civ that is roughly the same size as me how exactly are they benefitting?

They indeed get happy citizens, as much as you would. Now, if the real question is 'How much would they pay', this depends on the number of citizens that actually become happy. And for this, it matters how many Marketplaces they have, and how many luxuries they already benefit from. For example, you have to pay more for the 3rd luxury (2 Happy Faces) as for the 2nd one (1 HF), if your population is unhappy enough to need them all.
 
If they are offering lots of cash per turn - I don't mind giving them a few happy faces in return. Yet many people say that giving out luxuries is a No-No. So why? I don't get why all the advice is against trading luxuries out.
