Does anybody know if there's a mod or something that allows you to generate random maps of a specific length, at least ones larger than is currently allowed?

Not sue what you mean by allowed. In C3C the largest map size is 362x362. You can create them in the editor. You can create biq for the size you want and use that to gen random map, AFAIK.

If that is the case, then I suspect that Mapfinder would run making maps of the size specified in the biq.

I just mean that I want a utility or something that would enable me to make maps of any size that I wanted. You know, a size that's bigger than what is allowed in Civ 3 Vanilla. I don't have Conquests or PTW.

I forget what the limit is for C3, but one of the patches changed them, so look at the readme. I wold guess you would need to change things in the editor and save as BIC. I forget the name of the BIC, but you can find it in your directory.

Yeah well, I downloaded the map finder but so far, I don't see that you can actually create maps. I'll keep looking at it though.

I've been trying to get CivAssist 2 to run on my operating system, which is Windows Vista, but I haven't had any luck yet.

Mapfinder will create maps, no doubt. I have used it and most HoF games are made with it.

I guess I just don't understand how it works. I don't see how you actually play the maps. I don't see how you put the maps in your game.

You point mapfinder to a place to save the games that match your criteria. Then you may want to review the stats and pix for each map and then copy ones you want into the games directory.

I think there are details steps in the thread for mapfinder.

It took me awhile, but I have got Mapfinder working. Now I just need an extra computer to do it, since I am surgically attached to my mouse.....

The thing that really makes me confused is why it keeps telling me that I have to use it while Civ 3 is running...

Welcome to CFC, civbeast.

MapFinder is not importing maps, it's generating saves. What it does is: (1) checks the opening save against the ruleset that you set up; (2) save that game if it meets your ruleset; and (3) restarts the game. It then checks the new save and the cycle continues. It continues to do this until (IIRC) it either gets to the number of saves that you want or you stop it. It can't do that unless you've got Civ 3 running. Once it's got some saves, you load them just like you would any other save and start playing.

There was a thread posted by GmaHarriett that was a great help to me to get the bugs worked out of Mapfinder. In fact her thread should be stickied, it was the best manual for that program I could find.

Its still on the second to last page of the thread. I've never actually used the utility but I remember her posts were most informative.

In one part of her post she showed her file tree and had a "data" folder directly set in the C drive program files. When I tried that I got a BSOD on my next start up.

What did you do to create that data file without upsetting your comp?

Ask in the Mapfinder thread. I've used it before with no problem either. But it's been so long I don't remember it.

Somehow, I did it without resorting to adding that file. I gave Mapfinder a Folder on C: drive and made a Mapfinder save file also. I think you end up noodling around so much with getting it running that you forget exactly what all you did.
