I realize I'm a late commer to the game and I need a lot more games under my belt before I can even undersatnd some of the Well Wriiten Strategy guides I found here. Just want a few answers to push me in the right direction.

How many workers do you usually have (per city I guess is the easiest way to calculate) at any time?

Is there a big difference between adjust Sci/Entertai amnts globally at the Domestic screen vs individually in cities with Sci/Ent pops? Seems like they both achieve the same results just in a different way. Is it a 6 in one, half dozen in the other deal or are there implications I don't see yet?

I started on Chieftain, and have no problem winning every time but its always a Time/points win. I never can get anywhere near all of the Sci Techs discovered in time. I have the slider pretty far over 70%+ most of the time. I think that maybe most Techs are usually gained in trade and I am always ahead of other civs so I don't have too many to trade and have to research most myself. Maybe that's why I run out of time?

Thanks for the help!

Try to have at least one. more in the latter game.

Try to go step by step to learn this game. Put a governor adjusting the citizens moods. In the luxury slider (Domestic screen ) leave it to 0 or 10% in the lower levels you ca live with it.

Try to build your empire with macro managment ... you have time to micromanage the cities in later games ;)

Try to win building the space ship, or killing the other civs
Try to build cities all over the world to win by domination (my favorite).

Thanks for the help!

Any time :)

To improve your play, use the best piece of advice that I was recently given. Micromanage your cities. Build 1 worker per city, and DON'T automate them. Look at the stats of the city's tiles and choose the best action (build road, irrigate, build mine) to benefit your city. It will lead to bigger populations, more science, and more cash .....

Lower level games usually end up going over the time limit quickly simply because the AI is so slow researching. Try trading for techs at harder levels. These games go a lot faster. (If you can last that long).

My best advice would be to start playing at Regent level. The AI is severely handicapped at Chieftan (almost gaga) and Warlord isn't much better. At Regent there are no production bonuses either way so some of the articles will start to make sense :)

Workers: as others have said 1 worker per town is a good target for the early game (you'll need to connect your towns and improve the best tiles) after that you can watch for towns that aren't growing and pop out a worker from them. Most important of all is NEVER automate them before you've railroaded (Steam Power).

Entertainers/Scientists: In general you will be better off not using entertainers to manage unhappiness or scientists to control research. Of course there are specific situations where an entertainer or a scientist is called for.

Have fun

Ted
