I have a Macbook Pro. I got it for a graduation gift, and I'm not getting rid of it. I found crossover games, and a review says it's good. Should I pay for that($39), then get Civ V off of Steam? Please and thanks

Civ V is not Mac-compatible right now, so you'd be wasting your money. They have not yet announced plans for a Mac version, as far as I know.

Moderator Action: Moved to the technical subsection.

Theoretically, it could be possible to run Civ5 via crossover, but that's not sure.
I'm not a Mac user, please don't rely on my judgement. Wait until someone with more knowledge can comment on this, or until the first working reports appear.

He's aware it is not compatible for Macs, which is why he's asking about CrossOver games (its an application).

To TC: I'd recommend holding off an buying it day one as I don't have a Mac, but my friend who has one will try the CrossOver app with it, I hope it works cause I want to play some multi with her. I will let you know about the results as soon as I see the results (I'm hoping only 2 or three days after launch.)

Also, I'm sure you probably already know about this, but there is Boot Camp for the Mac letting you run Windows on it (You'll need a Windows installation disc still however, and those aren't terribly cheap.)

Get Crossover Games, it is marvelous at many Windows Games

Hmm... I'll able to play Civ 5 for £26 a few months earlier without paying tribute to Windows... and I could always test the demo out with the trial version to see if it'll work...

I think I love you.

You can get a trial version of crossover games, and you can try the demo of Civ V. But the trial version of crossover only lasts a week, and with Civ V being brand new I would imagine that it wouldn't be working yet. So I would wait a little until you tried it. You could also see if you can find out how Civ IV and V compare as to what they need to run, and try the Civ IV PC demo.

You could also buy Win7 Home Premium and install that using bootcamp. It costs more and you have to reboot to play, but it would definitely work.

Yeah, I've looked into using boot camp, but I'm a college student, and I haven't had much time to get to the bookstore to look at Windows prices, but I dunno if I could afford it anyway.

THANK YOU THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!

IIRC it's under $60

Windows is pretty cheap if you are a student. I would definitely get $60 Win7 compared to $39 Crossover. I don't actually know Windows student prices though.

Actually I'm pretty sure it is ~$40

Some people simply hate Windows and would go that extra ten feet to go around it

Got 2 Mac at home ( a MacBookPro 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and an iMac 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo ) and a PC user friend of mine granted to let me test if Civilization V could work with Parallels emulator ( and first, I can't wait to see how modding units and so on ! ) ...

Parallels 6 just came out and everyone says it's much much faster than the previous Parallels 5 ... but the problem remains the graphic card :(

Anyway, going to try everything and will come to tell what's the best to play until Firaxis make Civ V for Mac ......... :D

A MacBook Pro is a great gift. And Bravo for you to graduate ! ;)

Microsoft usually lets universities extend their site-license to students. So at my school, Windows is $15 or $20.

I haven't had a chance to get to the bookstore yet, but I plan on going tomorrow. Should I DL Civ off Steam, since Boot Camp WILL work?

Since it unlocks tomorrow, it may be FASTER to get the disks than DL, and since it's Steam, you'll still get the benefit of infinite downloads forever.

I wouldn't want to risk waiting on downloads on the day of a big release.

Bootcamp is the best way for sure and I agree with chaotoroboto ... I wouldn't want to risk waiting on downloads on the day of a big release too !

I'm a Mac user and I'd go for bootcamp. Having the ability to run a game in it's native environment is paramount for stability and speed. I guess... uhm... it's ok to pay for :nuke:windows:nuke: just to play Civ :D
