When I play CIV II my normal goal is to see how quickly I can beat it, normally by conquering the entire world.

I find this more challenging that building my cities to size
42 and getting a high score ... this is easy once you have
conquered most of the other civs.

I play diety, normal map size, 7 civs. I do "forbid tech from
conquest." and allow civs to restart. Restarts can add
a few hundred years to your total.

The best I have been able to do is 1380AD.

Welcome to CFC! I've heard of players conquering all 7 civs from a random start before 1AD. To compare fairly you really should normalize the starting situation. Join the Game Of The Month crowd and see how you do against them. There are some new players as well as some experienced ones, and the games go back and forth between Conquest and Spaceship. There is a Spoiler thread (you should play up to 1AD on your own before looking there) where players discuss the month's game and post logs. Look at some of the faster players and see if you can learn some tricks.

The real pros land a space ship just a few years after christ, which is in my opinion the greatest achievement.

Although playing early conquest is more challenging, I enjoy building up my civ, so I usually conquer the planet when my civ's grown huge.:)
