Quil18 review of civ 6

I have watched this guy play RRT3 and some Civ LPs along with some Europa games. First off you should edit your post and change lays to plays unless you meant lays. I do not want to be mean to quill 18 because he has a lot of energy and respect and I respect what his does with his channel and all but in all honesty he is much more of a role player than someone to watch to learn any sort of optimal play. I've seen him jump into games not really knowing anything about what he was doing but kept saying lets see how this works or lets see how this goes. Entertaining for awhile for me but I wouldn't exactly say my go to source for learning strategy and build orders and such. I give Quill18 huge respect though because in his review he admits that he isn't the go to guy if you really want to learn this game and suggests that you can find much better. He even says he should not be able to beat Deity and he is stomping it pretty decent.

I don't quite see what this has to do with the topic, but still: He never claimed to be the "strategic genius" or to be someone who reads on and on about good strategies, he very much says of himself that he's taking a more casual approach (even says so in the video linked above), which I think actually makes it rather impressive how good he's become at Civ V. In either case, it's not a strategy-focused channel, it's an entertainment channel.

I agree with what you said I was basically just saying that I have to take his review with a grain of salt since he is more of an entertainment player or role player compared to an optimal player. I'll give him one thing... he has a lot of energy when he records a game and he does make things entertaining when I do watch him play. I think my opinion about his review has something to do with the OP's topic but I could be wrong on that too :)

quill 18 isn't a good civ player he makes stupid decissions and thats olso a reason why i stopped watching his lets play..

But this revieuw is interesting because he beat deity This means the Ai needs some work like he said in his video he isn't a expert in civ he is actually bad at deity or immortal so yeah. Good game good mechanics but bad AI thats the point of the revieuw

In his video he admits he's not a "top 1%" player; he says he's a top 5% player, and that seems plausible to me. He also says he sees the game as a 9/10, but yes, he thinks the AI needs improvement to make it a 10/10. Also, he said he'd bump his score to a 9.1 if the UI were patched to allow sorting by yield etc.

Are you trying to say that only the best players can give a valid review? The game isn't meant only for the best competitive players, you know. The target audience is far larger than that.

Gerrard Winter, that's the name.

I am his apprentice in CIV 5, (he doesn't know of course)

His demonstration has enlightened me to play on KING difficulty and he is resourceful and what is brilliant about this British player is that there is no dead air throughout his nearly an hour demonstration every single time. He is showing/teaching you can't really tell but some moves are intentional, he is very good.

I wonder if he will release any CIV 6 LP however.......

What a fun video. Yep , not really a review as such, but gave his views on the game and where he sees the AI at the moment. Great ending stuff in the video.

He has some amazingly sober opinion about game development, betatesting and ongoing balancing.
A must watch for anybody who wants to start an ALL CAPS FLAME THREAD !!!11!!111!!

I'll second this, what does it matter if he isn't the most optimal player, his opinion is still valid.

I didn't want to come out and say this directly so I am glad that you did it for me. I guess anyones opinion could be considered valid but if you have a player who doesn't play the game very well how can he really give a good review of the game? I see all these reviews from gaming websites and magazines but it is pretty clear they don't know what they are talking about. I'd much rather listen to some of the Elite Players on SP and MP forums from Civfanatics rather than some entertaining valid review. To each his own though.

Quill has one playing style (extreme warmongering) that he plays in all his game. It is entertaining to watch (for some). It's not difficult to beat any civ game if you do that, regardless if it is Civ4, 5 or 6 (or any other version). I have played domination warmongering a couple of times, but I have also tested other, more normal ways of playing the game and they are much more fun.

I know that if you play Civ 5 on high difficulty levels you pretty much had to do certain thing. But this is civ 6, you are suppose to be able to have different playing styles. The so called "elite" players (at least those the LPs I have seen) don't even try to change their playing style. It is like these "elite" players have one formula to play the game and then they follow it. They don't seem to even try to better themselves and do something different. They do the Civ 5 style over and over, and regarding Quill, he does his warmonger style (over and over). But that their choice (and according to me, their loss).
