quit to desktop

When i play civ4 once in a while the game just quits then goes to desktop.
now its gotten even worse. when i play i click to skip the beginging movies. but when i do that it does what i said before. so when i didnt click or try to skip it ends the movies then it just quits.
so, has anyone had have anything like? anyone have any ideas to stop this??

Does the game crash to the desktop with no error message, it's just there one minute, gone the next?

If so, that's the same problem I'm having. Personally, I have a brand new Compaq Presario (bought it day after Xmas) with an AMD 3500+, 1gb of RAM, a nearly empty 250gb hard drive, and an ATI Radeon 700x Pro card (256mb).

I followed the instructions to get the game to even launch with the ATI card in, and everything seemed fine. Still a little popping during the intro cinematics, but gameplay seemed great.

Then, about four hours into a single player game (medium map, default settings), the game just disappeared. Like it had never been running at all. Restarted, no autosaves found, just my last manual save.

If this is a common bug with a patch, then I just haven't heard of it yet. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
