I grew up watching reruns of him in I Dream of Jeannie as Maj. Nelsonand then in Dallas J.R. Ewing, and I got to enjoy him again as J.R. Ewing in all new Dallas shows this last year. You will be missed. :(

Reuters) - Larry Hagman, who created one of American television's most supreme villains in the conniving, amoral oilman J.R. Ewing of "Dallas," died on Friday, the Dallas Morning News reported. He was 81.

Hagman died at a Dallas hospital of complications from his battle with throat cancer, the newspaper said, quoting a statement from his family. He had suffered from liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver in the 1990s after decades of drinking.

Oh no. He's gone. That's sad.

Dream of Jeannie! You're much older than you look, Mr V.

(not my favourite actor, though)

Oh, my. I never watched any of his shows, but J.R. is a legend here. May his soul rest in peace.

I remember when they started showing Dallas in then Czechoslovakia in the early 1990s, it was a huge hit

(does remembering it make me old? :( )

Not only did Larry play roles in a multitude of TV shows and TV movies, he also played some roles in major films:

Buck in Fail Safe
Lieutenant Cline in In Harm's Way
Eddie Combs in Harry and Tonto

And not so major ones:

Murdoch in Mother, Jugs, and Speed
Colonel Pitts in The Eagle Has Landed
Bo Cochran in Checkered Flag or Crash
Dick Benson in S.O.B.

But to me he will always be Major Anthony Nelson, habito champion:

To put it in a little more perspective, here's what an old friend of mine had to say this morning on facebook:

"Just learned Larry Hagman died, sad news. Larry's mom, Mary Martin, was a dear friend of mine and would always brag about him. I remember how happy Mary was when Larry son Preston named his first daughter Noel after Mary's friend Noel Coward... there's a lot show business history in that family. Rest in peace "JR" and give your Mom a hug from me."
