Doesn't it seem like the Barbarians start raging a lot earlier lately? Used to be they didn't start coming in waves until somewhere around turn 100. Now it seems like the rush starts about turn 40 (standard speed).

Did you up the difficulty? I haven't noticed anything different.

Again, it all depends on the number of cities on the map. The expansion-happy AI can move the arrival 'date' of the barbs, but I usually find they come around the same time - turn 120 or so in Epic speed.

One thing I have noticed is that the makeup of the barbs when they arrive can be different. My last game there were very few Goblins and Warriors, but plenty of Lizardmen and Wolf Riders.

I play at Monarch difficulty.

Also depends on whether or not you play a Mod :) Marnok will probably swarm you heavy real nice and early, and Fall Further doesn't care about any silly number of Cities on the map, you pass the "safety Turn" defined by your difficulty, and you become fair game.

Aha! I've been playing FF and Marnok lately. Also with a lot of starting Barb cities.

Is the 'safety turn' set somewhere ( GlobalDefinesAlt? ) where I might jiggle it a bit? I have a hard enough time fighting the buggers off, but they usually knock out a couple of AIs too.

It's in the HandicapInfo.xml: <iBarbarianCreationTurnsElapsed>

Lowest difficulty is 50 turns, and it moves up 5 turns for every notch you raise the difficulty, until Deity for only a 10 turn safety zone.

After then Animals may spawn, but those hordes of orcs definately do not spawn on turn 15 for me and I play immortal all the time, no mods.

The No Mods is what kills you :) We are talking about Fall Further in the last couple posts. For Fall Further, as soon as that number passes, you are fair game to see all kinds of units. For the base FfH, no Goblins/Orc Warriors or whatnot will show up until there are on average 1.5 cities per Civilization in the game.
