Ragusa

The other Ragusa is already part of the Ottoman city list. :)

I'd bet a lot of money that the people/person who chose the city-states meant the Dalmatian city, and that subsequently the writers looked up the wrong entry on Wikipedia [upon which the text is based]. I'd guess they were thrown off by the modern city's Slavic name. I bet this is what happened! ;)

It makes sense both ways.
Ragusa was the capital of Sicily, and that essentially finishes off the main Italian city-states (sicily has been kind of important).

The Sicilian kingdom's capital and chief city was Palermo. As it was for the county, and emirate.

That's wierd, the civilopedia entry says it was the head city of the Sicilian Kingdom. Ah well, I think it wqas probably meant to be the Croatian city.

Montreal is an Iroquois city? Really?! That is so wrong.

I do agree. I live in Montréal and it was founded by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642. If anything, it should be a French city, not an Iroquois one. The Iroquoiens village that was located on the island of Montréalway before the French ever settled there was called Hochelaga and not Hochlaga.

Sounds crazy, but plausible. :crazyeye:

Very plausible. There was clearly a wide disconnect between the authors of the civlopedia and the actual game developers. Lots of information about basic game mechanics is missing or inaccurate.

It was clearly rushed. "Consult the Combat Information Table article for more information." How about a link, jackass?

All these are in the game except Vienna, Prague, Montreal and Amsterdam. Did you not notice them? I think they may be keeping some, like Amsterdam or Carthage for future DLC releases.

they're all in my current game except Amsterdam (but i'm quite sure i've already saw it)...

I think Iroquois captured Montreal in the game from vordeo...

European city states I'm sure of:
Bruxelles, Copenhague, Dublin, Budapest, Bucarest (yes both, one's cultural, the other military), Stockholm, Helsinki, Vienna, Florence, Venice, Genoa, Varsovie, Ragusa, Prague

European City States i'm almost sure of: Amsterdam, Oslo

Asian City States: Almaty, Kuala Lumpur

American City States: Rio de Janeiro, Montreal

African City States: Cape Town

Did i miss some of them?
We can notice there are almost all european capital or country represented in game...it only miss Madrid and Porto (Spain and Portugal in a DLC?) and some eastern europe country (Riga, Tallin, Vilnius, Kiev, Sarajevo, Ljubjana, bratislava...)

and so few african and american cities!!!

Never seen Amsterdam, kind of assumed that the Dutch are coming in an expansion, as otherwise it probably would've been a lock for CS. Same with Spain and the Maya/Inca, actually.

Also, I remember checking the XML files to confirm Montreal was an Iroquois city, though I'm not 100% sure on that.

On that list, off the top of my head, you missed Singapore, Hanoi, Sidon, Seoul, and Tyre. Probably more, can someone with access to the code post a complete list?

yeah, forgot singapore, Seoul and Tyr, learn there are still some CS i never met (Hanoi and Sidon)
but all of them are asian...

are Sydney, Melbourne or Wellington a City State?

Yeah it's supposed to be Dubrovnik, no question there:

From wikipedia:

The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, as the Republic of Ragusa, also known as the fifth Maritime Republic (together with Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice), it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries.

I never even looked up the civilopedia entry - I simply assumed it was Dubrovnik. (Might be because I'm a Croat)

Anyone here familiar with modding know if editing the names of the city-states is doable? I'm getting a little sick of seeing the same cities every game!

I disagree with the choice of Stockholm, Helsinki, (I think there is Oslo too), that's too many scandinavian cities...why not Reykjavik?

LOL - Copenhagen is also in there if I recall correctly.

Anyway since you think they should not be in there then I urge to you read some history. For example the university in Copenhagen was established a few years before that sailing guy tried to find an alternate route to India :)

This may sound a bit crazy, but hear me out.

So I was browsing Civilopedia reading the historical descriptions of city states when I stumbled on Ragusa.

Spoiler :

Located on the island of Sicily, Ragusa is an Italian city of some 75,000 inhabitants. A port city situated almost directly in the center of the Mediterranean, Ragusa is some 3,500 years old. Originally settled by the native Sicels (ancient Sicilians), over its long history it has been conquered by the Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, French, and Spanish. Ragusa was the seat of the Kingdom of Sicily, created in the mid-12th century, and then part of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies under the Bourbons. In 1860 it became part of unified Italy.

Ragusa is constructed on a wide hill. A huge earthquake in 1693 devastated the city, and few of the original buildings survived. The city was largely rebuilt in the 18th century, in the process making it a marvel of Baroque architecture.

Ragusa's economy is based upon agriculture - especially olives - light manufacturing, and tourism. Ragusa is a beautiful city, with numerous museums and churches (including the wonderfully-named ""Church of Purgatory""). The Marina di Ragusa is a famous seaside resort, and the area boasts some of the least crowded beaches in Sicily.

Although not the biggest or most popular city in Sicily, Ragusa is beautiful and rich with culture and history - certainly worth conquering if one has an army or fleet in the area.

I can understand the fine churches and everything, but having an "olive based" agriculture and being steamrolled by a dozens nations seems a little suspicious to qualify it for a Civilization game.
So I decided to search a bit more about this city, and found out there was another city named Ragusa, which is now called Dubrovnik and lies in Croatia.

After pondering for a while, it became clear to me that the Civilopedia description should write about Dubrovnik and not the Italian Ragusa. Mainly because:

- there are already 3 italian cities in the game; and if they were to include yet another italian city, why not choose a more important one: Milano, Napoli, Torino, etc.; choosing a city from another part of the world would make more sense
- Croatian Ragusa called itself Maritime Republic while italian Ragusa is a landlocked city
- Dubrovnik (croatian Ragusa) has a more colorful history IMO, while about the italian one there isn't much to say.
- Dubrovnik was a trully city state (Republic of Ragusa: 1358-1808), while the italian one was NOT

So my theory is that the person who wrote the Civilipedia entry was if not drunk, at least dumb enough to write about Italian Ragusa just because it appears first in Google. I believe it was the intention of the developers to include Dubrovnik in the game.
Sounds crazy, but plausible. :crazyeye:

wow all this time i thought ragusa was the croatian one not a city in sicily. i didnt even know there was a ragusa in sicily

Ok you're probably right about Milan and Napoli, it makes sense. But why another Italian city and why make it maritime and not cultured. From the Civilopedia entry it's clearly entitled to be cultured, while the in-game city is maritime.

Probably comes from Sicily being a big island, giving the impression that it must be maritime.

A lot of the City States traits are questionable. Why is Edinburgh militaristic...that makes no sense at all when it should clearly be cultured.

Today's wiki featured article is Dubrovnik.

Edit: I thought it was today at lunch, but looking at the page now, it doesn't mention anything about Dubrovnik

It's boring to see same City states in every game. I think I would be not so difficult to attach about 100 city state names.
I still wonder what city states are Helsinki, Stockholm, Budapest. They are never been independent city states. Oslo and Edinburg might be, I'm not sure. Rio de Janeiro hardly, under control of Portugal or Brazil.
