Rallying call for all interested: Colonisation of the Moon mod!

Let's see, I could use some buttons... .dds buttons...

Circular buttons with images of:
The Earth, the Earth greyed out and the Earth with a stylish cursive X over it.
Some sort of scroll (like a declaraction of independence, for independence)
A light moon button and a dark moon button (for light/dark side of the moon issues)

BTW, Are we giving up on JBG's vision as it were, and making something different? I mean... How are we resolving the juxtaposition of the ideas we come up with or have come up with in the past and had rejected, which are now being reproposed by enthusiasts and what not with the design JBG laid out originally?

Personally, I originally signed on to help JBG realize the vision I thought he had firmly formed in his head for a colonization of the moon scenario. It has become apparent, however, that my impression of the solidity of his vision was wrong 8), and further, that JBG doesn't really seem to have the time to oversee this project :/. I am disheartened by what I see as the sort of haphazard leaderless fashion in which we are sort of "chasing random suggestions" put up on various threads for us, as well as the growing impression that we are aboard a ship adrift, without direction or leadership or someone with a clear vision of what this mod should look like and how it should play out.

It is my believe that without someone "in charge" looking at the direction we're going with the mod and steering our changes we'll get a sort of hodgepodge mod of mixed messages and mixed themes without a clear gestalt or overall patterned design or play experience. Given how much of the work which I consider to be "hard" that we've already done, this would be a really terrible shame. I don't know where D^2 or JBG are at this point, but.. what do you two think, Woodelf and Matt?

I'm neither Woodelf or Matt, but I think that you should stick to the original plan (the "Bible", right?). It's perfectly possible to take the suggested changes into another mod, but since whoever wrote the Bible obviously had it planned out quite well, this mod should stick to the original plan.

That's my $.02

Unless JBG can suddenly devote more time to this mod we seriously need to consider electing a new leader. This leader will need to reoganize all the idea that have been suggested and provide clear direction in all aspects of which direction this mod should take. He would have to write up a new "moon bible" to reflect all aspects of this mod. He will also have to be online regurally to address any questions and give direction when nessicary.

Anyone willing to take this responsibility upon himself please speak up. We will then vote on who should be the next leader of this mod.

Preferrably he or she should also be capable of taking in the semi-technical and sci-fi related tech suggestions and ideas, understanding them, and weeding the seeds from the chaff. Also, it'd be nice if they had enough of their own perception of what this mod should be to be able to make decisions that are neither arbitrary nor simple blow backs of "what does everyone think". :/. Just my thoughts. Of course, I'd be happiest if JBG simply re-emerged with energy and conviction 8) (as opposed to popping in without enough time to get into to anything so he just waves his hands and says, "It all looks great!").

The Lunar Rover graphic is kinda big, don't you think Woodelf? Why didn't you scale it down? Also what's with the brown hilites? Shouldn't those be black or silver, or at least civ colored? :/. Finally, why did you decide to use the model with the people? I had always envisioned lunar rovers as being unmanned. Looks good otherwise though. He did a nice job with the modeling 8).

I'd love for JBG to come back as well, but right now we are kind of rudderless and doing a haphazard job of tying everything together.

I don't personally care if we stick to the Bible or not since the Bible was written before the full capabilities of CivIV were realized and before it was known what ideas were outlandish and what were practical. I like some of the ideas people are coming up with more than the Bible!

I agree about the new leader. We need one. I have the most time most likely because I'm not a student, but I also know after 36 years of life I'm not a leader. :) I'm not a follower either, but more of a good right hand man. And as Belizan has correctly noted I'm a fantastic starter, but poor polisher. We should be able to get by by divvying up leadership among the three of us or by adding more people and giving them responsibilities. It's tough though since we have 3 wildly different schedules. :p

The Lunar Scout is tiny, and I used the same model for the rover and bumped it up some. Also, these models aren't dds so they can't be skinned yet. :( I think smitty is going to work on that for me after he gets back from Spring Break. I kind of like the manned part. ;)

I'll see what I do at some point this weekend.

There already exist buttons of a planet like you describe. Check the ones for the worldbuilder.

Have you located those Geo? I must be in a fog.....

Art-->interface-->buttons-->worldbuilder
"exit_worldbuilder.dds" speaks for itself I believe, could be used to implement/herald isolation.
"reveal_all.dds" might be usefull. Especially if the black cross is erased or overpixeled with the blue of the planet.

Art-->interface-->mainscreen
"globe_view.dds", but is a perhaps a bit small
"globebutton.dds"
"globebutton_hilight.dds"

Check Art-->interface-->population heads. Haven't seen these used ingame, perhaps a button there that could be used.

art-->interface-->screens-->techtree
"reveal_worldmap.dds" a flat map of Earth button, centered on America.

So, that's about what a pretty throughly search digged up.

O yes, don't forget to extract the art0.fpk file if you want to find all that. ;)

I got some good news. It is just a matter of weeks now before the SDK comes out. Here is a quote from an interveiw with Soren and Sid at Gamespy:

Johnson: Most of the story of Civ IV has yet to be written. We're about to release the source code for the game and the AI --

GameSpy: Do you have a release date for that?

Johnson: We're close! It's a matter of weeks, not months. But that's something that people have dreamed of for a long time. When we first announced it people just didn't believe it, that they'd get a chance to mess around with that.

That's great news for you and Belizan and anyone who codes. ;) Good news for me to play what everyone else dream up!

By the way, do you guys mind letting Lunargent being our leader if he is interested? He seams to know alot and would be the best candidate in my opinion. The leader would not have to to know how to do any modding as we got a good team to make any changes. We just need someone that is very knowledgable and has a clear picture of what this mod should look like when it is done.

If you guys don't mind we should ask Lunargent to see what he thinks.

I PM'd him today about simply helping out. He's fine by me. Have you spoken with him at all?

What exactly do the 3 of us (4 if/when d^2 comes back) need in leadership? I'm now going to brainstorm out loud. Tell me what's right/wrong.

1 - We need someone to tell us what's a good idea and what's not.
2 - We need someone to keep track of the overall big picture.
3 - We need ?????
