Rallying call for all interested: Colonisation of the Moon mod!

planetoid shot with some structure on it. This is from ingame itself, so my DX8 vidcard shows here.

And the freighter for the fluff of it. ;)

Oh, new page. In case you haven't seen it, there's a post with more screenshots in previous page.

Wow. Those shots are beautiful.

x = current coolness of the mod

x^1000 = coolness of the mod if those graphics were worked in.

ok, i am back temporarily, lots of school and work stuff. I am reading back through to see what deciding vote i am supposed to cast, the opening screen looks great btw

OK, so Belizan and Matthew have differing views, instead of voting for one of their ideas I'm going to list what I think it would be

Independent: Realizes strip mining the moon and shipping material down to earth is civilizational suicide and wants to free the moon from earth control. Thus, they are more like the militaristic civs from vanilla, and thus would tend to build bunkers for the wars of independence they are about to start. Also, they dont want to make the moon a new earth, building underground is easier and cheaper than rad shielding big biodomes or aboveground structures.

Scientific: think NASA, expensive bloated projects with fuzzy goals. Wants to make the moon like the earth, thus biodomes. Resists calls for independence as this would eliminate the entrenched bureacracy.

Commercial: Dollar rules, strip mining is the order of the day, I see these as being more militarized than the scientifics (private security firms etc) I think their architecture would be basically a fortified industrial park, not quite a bunker, more of a secure facility model.

I played, well I started a game and WBed in some of the units, some of the new art looks good, actually it wasnt the latest latest version it was the latest version from the email download place. it is sorta coming together. Well now we can make new models now except I start my new job wednesday so I wont have as much (any?) time for them argh. I still want to help with the story and gameplay and maybe I'll have some time to mess with more artwork who knows. what we really need is a new version of the moon bible with the backstory/civpedia included. we need to tack down the science of our mod, this isnt a SciFi mod its more of a SciNonFi mod in as much as we want to use real world or foreseeable tech. Incidentally, some crazy person put moon dust in a microwave and discovered it melts quickly. Lunar Rover + Magnetron (thing that makes microwave work) = Insta-road paving unit. Moon Dust in the Microwave

A new genre; SciNonFi. I like it.

Do what you can to help dsquared. I'm feeling a little burnt out at the moment myself. I'm thinking of picking up Galactic Civ2 just for some variety. I'll tinker with pedia stuff and balance for a while.

Thank for the Ideas dsquared. I will change my post to represent them as they are better then mine.

We could also have simular unit to make dust seas into bare rock or something.

*Definitely* a later era unit/ability. I mean, dedusting a chunk of territory the size of a small country?

yes, It would be best to have it a third era unit and still work very slow.(you won't see a moon with no dust sea remaining at the end of the game)

It could be an early tech: specialized worker type unit with only one ability: Sinter Dust Sea, except it takes like 100 turns and has to be protected etc, Basically it's an automated lawnmower with a microwave element and solar panels. Having it take on the order of 100 or so turns makes it become 'available' later, but you have to invest effort and money to defend it. I think we may all be a little burnt out, we were hauling butt a couple weeks ago, at what I think was an unsustainabe pace. We have a playable alpha, we can take our time tweaking it and add art in slowly. I miss civ2 and it's sprites, so much easier to add art, I think that with the move to 3d theyve priced a lot of potential modders out (timewise especially). The move to 3d also slows the game down unnecessarily. oh well have to work with it.

@belizan, I like your lunacy ideas, we could release a mod of our mod with that or just incorporate elements.

I couldn't agree more. I don't think any of us has the time for a long while to work on this mod at the pase we have been going in the past. I say we wait at least 2 or three week before we release another version.

A good time to make that tech flowchart, pretty up the tech tree, and slow it down some. :)

Let me know what you think of it. I wouldn't mind a temporary break from CIV 4 as well. from what I can see it supposed to be as good of a game as civ 4(If that were possible)

I just picked it up. :) I'll give some reports via email if you want. It looks moddable as well.

I'm back into the tech tree....

I switched Hydrogen Gelling for Hydrolysis. I'm adding a lot of "or" reqs instead of "ands". I'm also going to try to make the resources and improvements make a bit more sense.
