Random CTD's

Hey guys, I've emailed 2kgames already with my problem to see what they might have to add to my dilemma.

Now what happens is after about 5-10 minutes of playing my game will randomly CTD (Crash to Desktop) with no error messages showing. I checked Event Viewer and this is what logs show for the time of the crash:

"The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 7."

"The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 6."

Both of those logs show up for every CTD. I've had this problem with another game (Counter Strike Source to be exact) whenever it CTD's, so I'm assuming it could possibly be some kind of Software Conflict.

I only run Zonelabs Firewall, AVG Antivirus, (sometimes) Steam, in my system tray.

If anybody else has been getting random CTD's check your event viewer and we'll compare notes.

Peace

Same CTDs here. Event Viewer from my german WinXP Pro:

"Die Beschreibung der Ereigniskennung ( 0 ) in ( ) wurde nicht gefunden. Der lokale Computer verfügt nicht über die zum Anzeigen der Meldungen von einem Remotecomputer erforderlichen Registrierungsinformationen oder DLL-Meldungsdateien. Möglicherweise müssen Sie das Flag /AUXSOURCE= zum Ermitteln der Beschreibung verwenden. Weitere Informationen stehen in Hilfe und Support. Ereignisinformationen: 7."

means the same...

Well I think I figured out whats wrong. I turned off Anti Aliasing in the Video Settings and I didn't get any CTD's for 20 mins. I then turned Anti Aliasing back on 4X and 2 turns later it CTD's and then turned into a BSoD with an nv4disp.dll error.

So theres something wrong with the game that needs to be patched unless all of us have the exact same setup.

I still wish I knew what the hell that Event Viewer log meant.

The crashes are almost certainly video related. Now, whether it is driver based (ATI or Nvidia) or software based (Civ4) is another question.

People who are having no problems need to speak up and say what kind of drivers they are running and what cards, then we can compare.

Interesting. What version of the NVidia drivers do you guys have?

In most games when I turned on (well, forced on from the NVidia contorl panel) antialiasing in 81.85 (also tried 81.97 beta, etc) I got weirdness with colors of pixels being wrong - looked kind of like static, but only where there were actual dots of color. That was happening in DX, DX:IW, and NOLF2, but I didn't try any other games than that. That doesn't happen with 61.77, which is ye goode olde driver that I've had the least trouble with.

Radeon 9800 Pro
Catalyst 5.2 <-

Windowed Mode, AA = 2

No CTD

I had one one CTD and lag issue in end game before windowed Mode.

Hope this helps

Having problems here, too. Same sequence of events as reported by MrRoboto. Am running:

Radeon 9600 series
Catalyst Driver 05.10
Win XP Home
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512 MB Ram

Any hints or help would be greatly appreciated!!

I use the latest nvidia driver (81.85).

Have you tried the October DirectX SDK? There is some runtime debugging in there. Maybe the runtime update or the verbose errors will help.

By the way... I disabled AA and I still had a CTD...

... i am really angry about this buggy game... how do they dare to sell me this unstable piece of software??

I'm running the 78.05 Nvidia drivers. I also am frustrated with the crashing and almost wish I had waited before buying it.

It is a great game though that I thoroughly enjoy if you can look past the crashes. I'm very jealous of those people who experience no problems (if there are any).

Latest Nvidia drivers, 81.85 I beleive, No AA, Gonna try windowed mode next. Tried almost everything.

Seems to happen when I click on the mini map around 1920AD. :/

EDIT: hmm how do I run it in windowed mode? Can't "-w" or "-window" apparently :/

i have had only a few CTD's but always in endgame.
i have Nvidia GF440MX 81.85 drivers
P4 2.53 @ 3.06 and 1.5 GB of ram

throughout the game i monitored memory usage. it went as far as having only 200mb free! thats over 1 GB of memory used. there must be a mem leak somewhere because it progressively gets worse, not just from the start tho, when i save and exit, then reload, mem use is high, but not that bad. but in end game it gets worse quickly (10 turns) and its back up over 800 Mb used
