Random Game Crashes

I'm getting this a lot, usually in the late game. Screen goes black, music is still going, and when I alt-tab out, I get 'render error' pop up, but I could never read what it is saying.

Game usually runs well until the late game. Only started happening since the latest vanilla patch and into G&K

In vanilla, it would crash when I call up a leader right before it renders the leader.
In G&K it happens IBT

Again, dude, not the same problem as OP

I think the problem lies with my CPU getting taxed to 100% for extended periods of time, which causes the computer shut down. I don't know why, but the most I got from Vanilla is that the leader scenes get too choppy at the late game. Is this a good probable cause?

Could you check in the root of the Civ V directory (where the EXE's are located) and let me know if there are any recent .mdmp files there? If so, could you please attach them here and we'll take a look?

Thanks much.

I've been having crashes now as well. games runs fine, then screen goes black followed by the game closing with a message saying display driver failed. No set pattern to it, some times a few turns in, other times hours go by. Yes, my drivers are current.
here is a zip of the mdmp files -->https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4998803/civ5crashdumps.zipx

Possible, but I think I would have noticed lag up until the crash in that case. I don't however. The game runs completely smooth. Furthermore, my CPU should have no problem running Civ at even the highest settings.

Also, if it's caused by CPU overheat, then I'd get a BIOS message at startup.

I also believe this, I have run Civ 5 fine without any CPU issues. In my Core Temp (program to measure cpu temperature) it does not exceed 80 degrees and it is stable with everything. Wouldn't make sense for it to suddenly start acting up, alongside many other people :D

It is quite possible that with trillions of transiters, this game does tax the system maybe even more so than a test, and probably with longer time spans than a test would do. Although I am sure that no one plays this game for more than 3 solid hours in a row. :mischief:

It is also possible that a game that does great on higher end systems, while scale-able, may tax lower systems more than it does higher end systems. There are some coding errors that were introduced in the last patch and they could be causing crashes. Until the game is more stable, we cannot say for sure that any hardware is causing the crashes. All we can do is try the things that have been given us by the developers and wait for them to do their job and pass on files to help them in that endeavor.

Heck, I just turned everything to LOW or minimum. I now play with pictures of enemy civ leaders, almost all-white fog, no shadows, etc. The only setting I kept at high is the Textures. I was playing with graphics that make desert tiles indistinguishable to plains (hence, I kept the Textures high to see if it's the problem. Will check soon).

Got the game 6/28, both base and G&K, from Amazon. No problem installing. Both times trying to play took thirty minutes to load and after playing for five minutes whole system locked requiring hard reset.

Got a refund from Amazon, but would be willing to try again after these symptoms get addressed. Two files in the zip.

What are you talking about? :P
Anyways, I think it's more likely that the problem lies with my GPU than anything else. A chap with the same GPU as me has reported similar problems on the 2K forums.

Talking about it on the internet will not solve anything. Going out and getting another GPU would be your best bet. In fact, if you put in another GPU and there was no problem whatsoever (without changing any software) then it was the hardware that was the problem.

Dude, I shouldn't have to adjust to their game. It's their god damned duty to make sure their game fits all hardware that isn't ancient - and mine is quite current. Furthermore the game cost what, 35 Euros? My GPU cost me 600 Euros.

I agree that going out and paying 600 Euros to prove that it is the game itself that is at fault is not a wise idea. People here are trying to get through this mess equally the same. If every thing was working ok up until the patch, then you have nothing to worry about in your GPU. We can either try what has been suggested, or wait until Firaxes figures this mess out.

Yeah. Think I'll go with the latter one. Tried everything in this thread and elsewhere twice! I reckon it'll probably be fixed in the next patch though. Too bad I'm freaking addicted to civ, from playing only those 60 turns

It looks as if they released an update a day ago. I started a game, and I'm at around turn 300 and everything has been running smoothly, anyone else seem to have their problems fixed?

I'll keep playing to see if it happens again, never know until it actually does occur. Hopefully dshirk figures out the problem soon :goodjob:

Turning down the settings is working more or less for me. Managed to get an hour WITHOUT crashing. Needless to say, my enjoyment out of this game is getting better.

EDIT:
Looks like I'll be confined to Small maps from now on... Managed to play two hours straight on a Duel Map though.

My game crashed again, usually it when it was processing a turn but it was just spontaneous this time. It may or may not of been the same thing
