Q1. How can I tell which civ (e.g FDR, Catherine, Saladin, etc.) I'm playing if I forgot to look on the opening screen when I started the game?

Q2. How do I keep the grid on (Ctrl + T) and resources "flags" (markers) enabled (Ctrl + R) between sessions?

Q1: Thanks, I found the flag you mentioned. That works!

Q2: However, the grid and resource flags do not save. :( I even tried uninstalled and reinstalling cIV.

hey good place to post my question...

in civilization III i use to press "shift + U" whilst i had say a spearman active and it would produce a dialog box asking if i wanted to upgrade all spearmen, can i do this in IV ? and what is the keys required ?

You ctrl+click a spearman and press the upgrade icon in the bottom middle bar.

excellent thankyou very much... ive been playing today and discovered another annoying issue, can you help with this one...

i had something like 8 stealth bombers (all asleep/fortified) in one of my border cities, went to war and needed them, it worked out that i had to double click my city to gain access to a bomber, use it, then repeat the process 8times...

is there a method that i can use to select (wakeup) all 8 bombers at the same time ???

thankyou in advance...

EDIT - i will try hlding ctrl down before selecting a bomber... based upon your last answer :)

It is the Alt key not Ctrl.

Hold shift and click on all the bomber icons.

In nearly all my games i like to get the Oracle, what is the best early tech to pick? I usually go for metal casting as I have the prerequisites, it's worth the most in beakers and the early forge really helps me a lot.

But are there other techs which are more interesting? And this is on Prince so I don't want to get beat to it by the AI. I know on Noble I can delay it some more and then choprush it when an expensive tech opens up.

Alt would select all units on that tile, while ctrl selects all units of a certain type.

As for waking all units on a tile, you can shift+click on the tile on the map and choose "Wake all" from the popup menu. Though usually ctrl+click is faster here as well if you want to give them the same mission.

For the Oracle, the usual suspects are Monarchy, MC and CoL, depending on how many prerequisites you have time to unlock. Nothing for Monarchy, Pottery for MC and Writing for CoL.

I'm struggling on emperor at the moment so I don't even bother trying to build it. But when I did used to build it I used to always go for either code of laws to get confucianism and courthouses, or metal casting for the reasons you already said.

I did once use it to get iron working, which might seem like a waste. But I had marble and a good production city, I was Rome, I wanted to get my legions rolling ASAP and that was the fastest way to do it. So I guess the answer is always choose what you think will give you the most immediate benefit.

The added religion be it state or not can be a good addition, especially with the holy shrine. Will try this when i finish my current game mopping the floor with Kubla and Stalin.

It's different when trying to upgrade all units. What you're describing is the commands for units in a stack, not for units globally. It is indeed Alt-click, using the upgrade button in the menu bar, to upgrade all units in your empire. Using Alt while moussing over that button will also tell you much it's going to cost you to upgrade them all globally.

Which ever one costs the most beakers. If you're going to go for a free tech, you may as well grab the one that's going to save you the most time if you have research it yourself. Generally I for for Metal Casting, or Monarchy if I haven't met the requirements for it. I never go for The Oracle unless I've founded an early religion and I have Marble nearby, it's just not worth the risk that I'll end up wasting a bunch of Hammers.

I'll usually use the Oracle for Code of Laws, or on water heavy maps, MC (for Colossus).
