Ranged combat really bothers me in this game.

I will probably be flogged for this but, the ranged combat is too unrealistic for me. I really don't like the scale of this game. I don't like how canons can bombard ships at sea over whole cities. I really don't like archers shooting over bays.

I know the combat is more tactical than previous civ games but, if I want to use tactics in battles I'll play Total war. War in civ should have remained abstract and not so tactical and ridiculous. I don't like the fact that the next iteration of civ games will more than likely adopt this same 1upt and unrealistic ranged combat system.

I used to like the simulation aspect of civ games. I liked how smaller island nations could house hundreds of troops I really liked the massive scale, and the numbers aspect. They had the right amount of abstraction and simulation now it feels like I'm playing a board game. I think I may be done with this series for good at least for future games :(.

Hmm for me its the opposite.

I didn't think it was a large scale. I think it reduced things to a small predictable game every time. And the lack of using terrain didn't make it realistic in my mind. I made do with combat in Civ 4. But I think you are right, most people here like 1UPT rather than stacks of death here. I know I do. I find it both more immersive, more simulative, and less... well boring and predicatable than Civ 4 battles.

I agree with you it can be boring, but the combat is much better with mods that do not limit you to 1upt. Mods like RoM with surround and destroy, and flanking bonuses make separating your units, armies, legions into different stacks viable. It also adds more depth and planning as well.

Archers and artillery units also have ranged ability but it's not as far reaching but still gets the job done within the stack. IMO civ should have went the less drastic route for combat, but I can understand why fans like the combat for V.

I personally love the new combat. I don't think I could ever go back to stacks. How else could two Incan slingers hold their own against a much greater force.

If you are going to complain about ranged battle stretching the whole immersion experience, you need to add those huge red arrow things. Yeah, I like obvious interface, but big animated arrows hovering over the land scape, carefully designed to look just as 3D as the terrain and units, just breaks the immersion for me every time.

As for gameplay, I really like the ranged combat, and so, I only complain when someone brings it up. ;)

I too could not go back to stacks of death and useless archers. The ranged combat was a better improvement than 1upt for me. Yes it is totally unrealistic that my artillery can attack the enemy from the horn of Africa into Yeman and Saudi Arabia, but it looks so damn cool! (I still remember this from my first ever Civ5 game, blew my tiny little mind)

Archers were far from useless. Put them in a city, defend a hill, and with current mods they can range bombard but not over whole tiles, just the adjacent tile but it works as the archer doesn't get damaged and is protected by the army which is represented by the stack.

If I had a large army heading into my territory then 2 archers were pretty much useless, whereas now with the right terrain they can hold of the horde ntil my army gets there. Thats what I meant but I was not too clear

Well that's because the AI is pretty dumb and will throw away units like that. I don't like how you can take over whole empires just by positioning your canons in the right position and a few shock troops to supplement them.

Personally I like the tactical nature and the ranged units. the stack of doom/suicide catapult system really just didn't give me the same sense of immersion. Seeing archers fire over the front-line troops does seem pretty realistic, even if sometimes the scale can cause some funny situations.

1upt has its own merit, but too much micromanagement with the current UI. This is why i dislike going for domination games.

I'm fine with using my imagination to adjust scale to different parts of the game. When I go into battle, my imagination automatically zooms in the scale, so a hill on the map becomes an actual, single hill, instead of 100 miles of hilly terrain.

I've also done the same for time in every Civ. In every single Civ there has been the 'problem' of battles lasting for hundreds of years, and my imagination has always adjusted the timescale during major war conflicts to make it only a few months/years.
