Rat 06 - AWDG 20k

played some starts and all was awful until this one. Played 20 turns, we have 2 warriors and a rax, settler for 20k city in 4.
We have 2 locations to settle. east or the location I prefer 1 tile south of worker

I'd like to sign up. I've looked through those LK threads and i like the variant, but i didn't have time to join, but now i think i can afford one more SG.

The start looks awesome, but i think a mil civ would be much better because it is very good for both AW and 20K (Heroic Epic). I'd go for Japan: good traits for the variant, good UU and not played very often.

I'd like to give it a go too. 20K and AW are my favorites. Looking over the thread there seems to be an emplhasis on Colossus when I think pyramids is a better 20K city goal along with Great Lib. I would think using the second city to take advantage of prebuild would be a big help. Getting an island under control with AI being separated will be key to tech race to gather GW's. Suicides will be a premium to get all contacts to lower cost. Will roll some starts later if accepted. I'm thinking about sci, mil civ.

2 beautiful chokes with one choke being perhaps more open land. Still tentatively scouting. 2 cities down. I like Berlin for the 20K even though it is the capital. The chances of landing GW's without the prebuild is slimmer on Demi though so or another city may have to become capital asap.

Barbslinger, glad you can join us. To be honest, I don't think you're start is that great. I've been going by the following criteria in trying for starts...maybe I'm being too selective though.

1. decent/average capital location.
2. 20k location 3-4 tiles away, on a river with a few hills and bg. If we're lucky, some resource bonuses.
3. I don't get wiped out by a nearby civ's stack of warriors. :p
4. depending on our traits, we will most likely get a despotic, early GA like in LK106. Because of this I've been leaning more towards the Iron/Horse UU's, MW and Immortal as possibilities, rather than a MA UU. I still think the Bab archer, hoplite, etc. are too early, unless we can survive for awhile with no contacts...possibly an isolated continent or archiapalego start.

The Babylon start is pretty average, but more what I have in mind. I don't like babylon for a civ though, because their UU will waste our GA. The civs I think are best for this variant are: Persia, Ottomans, Iroquios, France, Japan, India, China, Korea, and Germany.
 
ok after millions of starts, I have a good one. 70% water archiapalego, I have bronze, masonry and ceremonial burial. also, 2 warriors.

ok, now we have 3 starts and I would like to hear from all of you which one you prefer. i think at this point we should just select one of these.
Personally, I would like to start with MP's try. The Ottoman UU is awesome and would help us a lot.

The reason for the Colossus is it the some of the best culture per shield. IIRC shakes and Zeus are the only ones better in shields.
 
I like Rat's Bab start. We need a number cruncher to say which location is better for shields. I like the location 3SE-E for wonder land.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I was hot on my start for the defensibility. The shields would suck until gov change/rails. The food is fantastic though, 3 cows for one city and 2 wheats in the other. We could populate like crazy and if we are with only one other AI on that island we should be able to outprodue and get the early island domination.

Out of the other 2 I like Rats 1S of the wheat, mine the plains and get a temple rolling asap and then Colossus - Pyramids - GL - GL if possible. food looks good too.
 
hmm, now we have split opinions

I think barbslinger start has not enough shields in the long run. In fact I think even pre-monarchy, my start has good potential. For AWDG we need other good cities as well in order to survive, but the land looks rich and fertile as well.

barbslinger's start has great potential for defense.

So, maybe since nobody talked about MP's start, shall we have a vote:

a. Babylon
b. Germany
c. Ottoman

after thinking again, my vote goes for Babylon than Germany
 
I vote for the babylonian start. It has the most shields for the 20K and food bonuses. The only thing i don't like is that settler was built a bit late, i would 've built it before the barracks, but i think it is still better in the long run because it has the most shields.
 
I built the rax first since growth was too slow

I think we need to talk about where 20K goes and a research path. I like 1S or 1E of wheat if that is coast. 1S gives up the colossus but it has nice shields. 1S of worker may do well too. If I have time later I can do a shield count. We really need to know the terrain E of the wheat. I played a few more practice starts and found that it is tough to get the colossus. We really need masonry for the walls / prebuilds in 20k and rely on archers and spears for defense initially and get to lit as feasable. Growth for research cash is important so keep pumping settlers and cross your fingers we are not alone with 2-3 othe civs. I did find that if early contact is made and you can get 2 spears built they will impale and a leader is entirely possible.
 
it would be great if you could count the tiles and shields

I prefer 1 south of workers sicne it would be away from the enemy as well. I started research on masonry due in 13 turns, then I guess we need WC for our UU and hope that carries us through for a while
