Rat 06 - AWDG 20k

I don't like 1E and 1S of the wheat because it is clear without calsulations that there are less shields there. I would go for 1S of the plains cow. Another option would be to place it near the wheat, but not on the coast to grab the hill and all those BGs. That will give slightly more shields then the cow location, but we won't be able to build the colossus.

then I guess we need WC for our UU and hope that carries us through for a while
With 4-5 cities producing bowmen I would think we could take out our initial opponent. 2-2 is a pretty good punch prior to IW and even after that if we can travel through mountains and other defensive cover. Do we know who is next to us?
On the shields we still don't know the entire terrain layout E of wheat. Makes it tough to compare. Is that fortified warrior healing? He needs to do some more recon.

If 20k were by the wheat, it could quickly grow by itself with 4 floodplains+wheat. That is it's positive, but things could be better utilized. There's no way it could have as much Monarchy, size 12 production.

Build 20 below the cow. The "wheat city" needs to constantly build workers/settlers for building up 20k city and founding new towns. The capital can be strictly military, while the 20 city builds culture (hopefully).

lurker's comment: Don't forget the possibility of disease. That can really screw up a wonder build. Can you get the 20K city good without floodplains?

That's definitely true. I don't want the 20k by the wheat. I was just pointing out a benefit of it being there (which isn't happening :p ).

I like MP's thinking. I was oringinally worried about the growth of cow20K but with wheat town supplying workers to merge after they improve the tile they will work I think it will be fine. Personally, I feel the size of the town is a bigger factor in determining shields in the early going. A temple will have to get in there to control lux cost but it should at max pop.

I agree with MP's plan, so settle 1S of worker, the warrior is not healing, this game is without barbarians. I just didn't want to bust too much fog in order not to meet the AI too early. We can send it east to check what the land looks like beyond the river.

Also the 1st AI we meet I hope we can get CB to get a temple built after Colossus. In many test games I missed Colossus so we should start it on colossus immediately and merge some workers in from wheat town. So it sounds to me like capital will build another settler and then go to military as long as we don't meet anyone.

I have it. I have a turn or two to figure out the 20K location. I will explore east immediately.

Pre-flight – Wake up Babylon’s MP and send him east to explore. Wake up the sentry to the west and head him back towards the capitol. Lux up.

2900 – MP in place, lux back down.

Here is an analysis of our potential 20K sites. Assumes 12 best tiles worked.
Green dot – 4 BG (8s),1 desert(2s), 1 wheat (2 extra food),1 plains(1s), 5 reg grass (5s) – 16 shields
Yellow dot - 4 BG (8s), 4 grass (4s), 2 FP, 1 wheat (1 ex food, 1s), 1 plains (2s), - fter monarchy (15s)
Blue Dot – Plains cow(1 ex fd, 1s), Sugar (2s), 1BG (2s), 1 grass (1s), 4 plains (4s), 1 hill (2s) – Max 9 working citizens – 12 shields.
I’m not even going to figure red dot.

So Green Dot is it.
Settler=>warrior=>worker

Found Nineveh on Green Dot. Start the Colossus, due in 100 turns.
Worker=>warrior=>warrior=>warrior
Masonry=>WC

Warrior=>worker=>warrior=>spear
Join a worker to Nineveh.
WC=>pottery (switch spear to Bow)
Bow=>Bow=>worker

great analysis Bugs, let's hope we can bag the Colossus, then go for a temple. I would actually swap the worker for a settler and send it to the original spot to settle a 3rd town. Since this is AW, we need to expand faster before meeting the AI.

geez. 1st interturn and India shows up. a settler and warrior from the north fog.
No trading with him (against the rules).
I'm thinking it's best to avoid a GA as long as possible, but not to the point that it hurts us.

1700
India units run off west.

1675
Pottery is discovered. Starting Alphabet for our cats and GL.

We have purple borders approaching.

- you can lower the lux slider and switch a citizen in Ninevah to a scientist to complete Alphabet in 9 instead of 12, but that would stop growth. Growth is really needed at the moment but later it will be.
- Babylon can make spears/bows in 3 turns.
- What's our strategy here? hunker down and expand slowly or try to get some kind of archer or archer/cat rush.

Not really a great site for the 20k, 16 shields is not so much and it is a second ring city if we stick to CxxC placement. I think we should have built it deeper in land and built the oracle instead of the colossus. It would be difficult to get wonders now. What are we going to build next? I think we don't have any chance of getting the oracle, so i think hanging gardens should be next and then the GL. But it will require a lot of research, not sure if we can afford that. We can build MoM instead, less culture, but only requires researching 1 extra tech on the way to literature. The best case would be if we can find some ivory of course :D

we need another town faster, we can't afford 2 cities or we will die soon

Obormot, you are up

I have to agree with this this. Corruption will be terrible.

OK, i played. Built the colossus, started temple in the 20K city.
Indian warriors suicided near Babylon, we didn't loose any units.
I built a spear and a settler in Babylon, founded a city in the north. It is further then CxxC, but we don't have any roads now anyway, so i decided to build it on the hill for defense bonus and near the river so that we don't need a duct. Placing a city 1W of the cow later will fix the pattern. I started granary in Ashur becase it has the most food. I think we can make Ashur a settler factory and Babylon a military factory.
I discovered Alphabet, started Writing, no beaker invested yet.
Some bad news: i met a mongol warrior, he cam from the east, where the 20k city is. Mongols were ahead in tech and i couldn't trade. We have 2 wars now, but the mongols did not attack us yet.

I'll play tonight. Any comments are more than welcome as to adhere to team objectives. I am still confused about the 20K city. We are stuck with the future corruption so a court will be in order down the road I presume. City placement to avoid more severe corruption will be a factor. Would basing a CxxC around 20K be the way to go and then after FP goes into 20K it would be negligible? Perhaps a dotmap discussion. I'll wait and perhaps put this off until we resolve some issues. I'm already thinking the granary is premature. Without roads we are going to need military ASAP. Like LKendter explains and I agree with, AW needs military controlled before buildings.

I would switch Babylons to a granary, which will complete before size 6, then settler which builds a city in the original 20k spot below the cow.

Have Ninevah work the lake instad of the desrt because that shield isn't gonna help the temple.

lurker's comment:
Once you get the FP, the fact you are in the second ring will not matter much. Getting to the FP quickly and rushing it with a leader will definitely help you.

Also Sir Bugsy didn't seem to take into account the fact that extra food translates into shields. You will have more than 16 shields if you mine the plains and probably also the desert. If the plains and wheat is mined you get 2 more shields I think, so 18 once you reach monarchy. Work 2 desert squares and count the center square and/or plant some forests and I suspect you can go to 20 shields with starvation - probably 17-18 without.
