Rat 07 - English Role Play

Turn 291, 1505AD: Americans again try to grab a bit of Ex-Germany, but this time we're first
Rat7_OurLand1505AD.jpg

Also found Hit the Road, Sam in the same region. In the south of the island we disperse a barb camp and found Tobacco Town and Buffalo Hill. With science up to 80% we can just do Industrialization before ToE comes in. New Leeds and German Desert founded. Two cav armies take Hamburg, and we keep it:
Rat7_Hamburg1505AD.jpg

Settle More German Desert. Land some troops on a smallish French island, at Logrono. Rush a few settlers.

IT: Germany shows up with some ships :). Evil Russia declares on our good friends the Arabs.

Turn 292, 1510AD: Take Heidelburg after naval bombardment with one cav army and one knight army. One cav army is enough to raze Leipzig.
Rat7_MGL1510AD.jpg

This one will be an expeditionary army to France. Found Horseburg, Edge of Germania, and Green is the Colour. Increase sci to 90% to be on the safe side.

Turn 293, 1515AD:
Rat7_Logono1515AD.jpg

Elephants Castle founded. Three cav armies and a knight army kill 7 defenders in Konigsberg and the capital of Germany relocates elsewhere. One continent clear of Germans. Our workers start clearing up the crater mess that someone :mischief: left behind. Turn sci up 100%, London has gained a turn on ToE as well. Arabia will pay 11 gpt for Dyes, and he gets it, because he's our best friend. A subsequent deal for incense yields a whopping 14 gpt!

IT: Hamburg flips back to Germany - oh well. Takes some units with it, can't remember what.

Turn 294, 1520AD: By pure accident we had a big stack of cannon just outside Hamburg, and a cav army retakes it. Settle No more Flips! and Please?. Cav army lands in France.

IT: America and Germany sign peace. I will not renew, Germany is nearly dead. French ignore our army.

Turn 295, 1525AD: New Frankfurt taken. One defender left in New Heidelburg. Land more forces. Bombard New Cologne, it has 2 defenders. Our cav army leaves a path of destruction in the French countryside.

Here's Germany. All of it:
Rat7_Germany1525AD.jpg

For the next player:
- There's an unmoved settler in Logrono, meant to replace the city, but of course do as you please. There's a little expeditionary force in Logrono. There are two more settlers on the mainland, unmoved, and a boat in Hyderabad to take them wherever you want :).
- There are some fortified units in and around the small German island, as well as on our mainland. I think I unfortified at least one unit in every other stack.
- I think I used up all the MoW shots for this turn.
- I didn't bother to MM much after turn 0, it doesn't really matter anymore.
- ToE is supposed to finish same turn as Industrialization.
- There's 21 turns of war on France left.

The save:

most excellent progress :goodjob:

Let's wipe France and Germany off the map. Maybe we can rush some temples once we have ToE. We can switch off research and use the money for some quick border expansion to reach 66% faster.

Well I wasn't winning that game of Civ IV anyway...

Got it!

(0|295)1525 AD
Everything looks in order, I pretty much just hit Enter.

(IT) Not much. Looks like America is hoping to grab some more land.

(1|296)1530 AD
Redline with Man-O-War the two Riflemen at New Heidelburg. Cavalry Army takes it from there.
Rat07_1530AD_New_Heidelburg.jpg

Keep it as we have no Settlers in the vicinity, and Germany is just about toast.

Redline with Man-O-War the two Riflemen at New Heidelburg. Knight Army takes it from there.
Rat07_1530AD_New_Cologne.jpg

Keep it for the same reasons.

New Salzburg is also snatched from the French.
Rat07_1530AD_New_Salzburg.jpg

I land some units on the French mainland.

There's never enough Galleons, but those we have work to relocate much needed troops.

(IT) We kill a French frigate on defense. The French pile in 4 extra Riflemen at Lyons. Yeah, I might not attack there just yet...

(2|297)1535 AD
Do some War Settlin'...
Rat07_1535AD_War_Settling.jpg

Do some bombardment at Besancon, damaging all units at least one HP. Three Cavalry and a Knight Army are able to raze it.
Rat07_1535AD_Besancon.jpg

The first major French city has fallen, after countless wars with them.

At New Stuttgart, the red-lined Rifleman and Longbowman both fall to a Cavalry Army.
Rat07_1535AD_New_Stuttgart.jpg

We keep it.

(IT)
Spain and Arabia decide to gang up against Germany... who has one city left.

Defense in France is difficult.

The three-techs-in-one-turn manuever:

I turn off research and get +527 gold per turn.

(3|298)1540 AD
Found Pink-B-Gone on the ruins of Besancon.

Land many more troops at Lyons.

Chase Germany to Amiens.

Rush some Temples.

(IT)
French mount a light assault on our newly claimed land.
America and Russia sign a peace treaty... yawn

(4|299)1545 AD
Time to assault Lyons. Starting off with a Cavalry Army flawlessly killing Veteran Rifleman, I'll take that! Three more Riflemen and a Cavalry fall to our Cavalry.
Rat07_1545AD_Lyons.jpg

Lyons is razed. We build Lyons Plus Plus adjacent to the ruins.

Waiting for the Cavalry to arrive (literally) at Amiens, I redline all the units and destroy the barracks with Man-O-War.

We have >66% of the population now. We've gone from 51% to 54% of area since I started.

(IT)
France grabs some land in old Germany. That won't last long.

(5|300)1550 AD
We get more Silks from Arabia in exchange for Medicine.

Auto-raze the French city that popped up in old Germany after killing the Rifleman with the Knight Army.

Bombard Avignon nicely, then kill the four defenders (one Cavalry), with four Cavalry of our own.
Rat07_1550AD_Avignon.jpg

We raze it.

We move towards Marseilles.

(IT) Germany sneaks a boat out of their only city, Amiens, which just lost 2 population! Grr!

(6|301)1555 AD
Russia will talk. I get one of their two cities out of the deal.

Same ol' song and dance and we get Marseilles.
Rat07_1555AD_Marseilles.jpg

We raze it. (Contrary to the screenshot).

Remaining lands, mid-turn:
Rat07_1555AD_Remaining_Land.jpg

Bombard'n'Army at Amiens:
Rat07_1555AD_Amiens.jpg

Thought there was something on that boat, but...

Rat07_1555AD_Dead_Germans.jpg

Interestingly, this is only the second civilization to die. Only India had been eliminated up until now. Russia and Spain both live on.

Focusing on France's holdings on the Interesting Island, with 3 redlined units and one healthy Cavalry Army, its a recipe for...
Rat07_1555AD_Zamora.jpg

Decide to keep it since no Settlers near here.

55% land area.

(IT) French settle a city in their void with a single Cavalry defending it.

(7|302)1560 AD
Destroy the newly founded city of Brest.

Found Orange Crescent in France.

Kill a 7-Rifleman offensive from France.

(IT)
Arabia finally comes through for us:
Rat07_1565AD_No_More_Russia.jpg

(8|303)1565 AD
We capture Grenoble on the Interesting Island.

Like most of this turnset, more logistics of moving our forces (and especially Armies) from Germany to France.

(IT) More guerilla warfare from France as we move about their island.

(9|304)1570 AD
After heavy bombardment, I run out of units with just one redline Cavalry left in Rheims. Oh well, next turn.
Also completely bombard Orleans, but have no units to attack. Three Cavalry Armies from the German island campaigns finally arrive though!
We have 27 Man-O-War attacking Orleans and 28 Man-O-War attacking Rheims.

Rushing more Temples.

(IT)
Not much. France doesn't have a lot left, I think.

Arabia revolts to become a Fascism (which they just researched).

(10|305)1575 AD
Found Centroid in French territory.

All those Man-O-War do us well at Rheims:
Rat07_1575AD_Rheims.jpg

Razed.

And at Orleans (3 Cavalry Armies doesn't hurt either):
Rat07_1575AD_Orleans.jpg

I don't think Sun Tzu on this tiny island is going to help our win date any, compared to the risk of flip.

This leaves France with 4 cities.

Found Brittany in Northern France.

Whats left of France:
Rat07_1575AD_Not_Much_Left.jpg

I left a lot of stuff unmoved. Have fun. I did basically no MM my whole turnset. I didn't put a lot of thought into worker assignments, especially in the all-corrupt old Germany.

We're at 62% area. The last 4% should be easy between border expansions and France's last 3 main cities. Worst case, the Spain/France island could be captured.

Don't mind the stray American units, they mean you no harm.

Man-O-War probably don't have any Bombard left if they don't have a full 7 movement points.

We're extremely thin on defenses, but our rail net is excellent. I see no threat, though. And even if there was, we'd retake whatever the next turn.

I was assigning post-Temple corrupt cities to Riflemen, because it didn't seem to matter. Feel free to noodle around with it.

Rat07_1575AD_Minimap.jpg

--- The Save ---

We have been at War with France since turn 286. We must have War on turn 316 (11 turns away, won't ever happen).
We must stay at war with Germany until we enter the Modern Era (oops, they're dead).
We must not declare war on Spain until we enter the Modern Era (shouldn't matter).
We have 174 TOTAL units (non-slaves, from the Military Advisor), and 112 cities. No worries.

Roster:
zyxy - all done
Vol - finally got us some France, all done
pindicator - WIN THIS THING! before 1600 AD!
ThERat - all done

WOW, EXCELLENT TURNS!

Here I was spending the day hunting down my costume and come back to these gems! I'll try to finish this up proper after work tomorrow, but great job everyone!

0) 1575AD

Move units in position to take at least two French towns next turn. I'm going to go skimpy on the writeup this time, because we all know what is the last thing to happen.

1) 1580AD

We are 67 tiles from the domination limit.

What gives with the French Super-Rifles!? THREE of our armies are redlined on the first rifle and 3 cavs impale on another without scratching it!

Tours is captured.

Found New Reading.

IBT-

Arabs decline to renew our alliance against France.
Americans cancel our deal as well. Costs near 300gpt to buy 2 luxuries!!!

2) 1585AD

We are 47 tiles from the domination limit.

A redlined rifle kills our army! (Okay, it did have 5 HP, but still!) What is up with this rng? Good thing its the last turnset.
It then knocks 8 HP off of the next army to attack it!!! But Chartes is now ours.

Found New Birmingham.

IBT-

I didn't mean to, but I left a city open and France empties 4 riflement to try to take it next turn.

3) 1590AD

We are 15 tiles from the domination limit.

Settle Tile Poacher and New Richmond.

Kill all the French rifles thanks to Man-O-War bombard.

IBT-

Trade TM with Arabs

A lot of expansions. We should have it this round...

Attached are the post dom save and the turn before for those that want to add to their hall of fame. It's the auto-save, but I don't think you have to do too much to get the win: just defend Tours.

Great game everyone; it was a fun role-playing experience!

Now I really want to buy Civ4.

congratulations everyone. it was a nice variant and though I never played with you guys, I think the team rocked!

Well played! Variant was nice, especially the oscillating war with France was causing some difficulties I think. As always, later in the game the variant rules hardly matter...

Will you keep playing civ3 or move on to civ4?

well, a nice variant can always be good, whether Civ3 or Civ4 (so far it's a lemon anyway).

If someone would come up with another fine variant, I wouldn't mind playing.

Great team, fine victory.

It would be interesting to know how we would have scored against ThERat's original scoring system.

Personally, I think I'm done with Civ3. But not ready for Civ4 SGs for a while.

The "no diagonal moves allowed" variant idea still intrigues me.
