I've been playing civ4 this weekend and i've not been impressed (cant stand the 3d zooming graphics). So ive been getting the previous versions of civ out to satisfy my turn-based urges. So far im thinking i'll come back to civ2, but there are a few problems i'm seeing in the short time ive spent playing it.

How do I destroy towns that i've taken over? In the first part of the game I like to clear a nice big area for future expansion, removing any civs before they have their chance to build their defences. In doing this I take over their cities, which I don't want to keep a hold of. How do I get rid of them?

Also, are there any hotkey guides around?

yeah - i have the same problem. i recently came back to civ2 and cant understand why i cant raize cities. i tried playing a occ the other day but captured a city without being able to get rid of it again:mad:

Sadly there is no such option in Civ2, but you can force a city to be disbanded by rush-buying settlers/engineers in them until they reach size 1. When you then buy a settler/engineer in that city it will be disbanded. Note that this doesn't work on Chieftain difficulty.

Well this is a downer. However, I suppose its more realistic to take over cities rather than rebuild. Its just something ill have to put up with.

One thing I could really use is some sort of keymapper. Id love to play this on my laptop, with less use of the mouse (touchpad) as possible. However, since laptops dont have the numkeys directional pad, theres no way to move units diagonally using the keyboard (or is there?). Has anyone managed to create a keymapper in the last 10 years?

On the razing cities issue, each time you win a battle against a city defender and the city has no walls, one citizen is lost in the city. So if the city is size 1 and you beat the defender (even if there are more defenders in the city) the city will disappear. Once you own the city, though, you can starve it down to size 1 or keep buiding settlers until it is disbanded.

Most laptops I have dealt with have a "Function" key that will map the numberpad onto some of the regular keys (often WER-SDF-XCV). You can also use the arrow keys and the Home/PgUp/PgDn/End keys to substitute for NW/NE/SE/SW diagonal keys. I saw a keymap for Civ2 once several years ago, but don't remember where (Apolyton?). If searching doesn't turn one up, make a nice one and share it with the world.
